Compost Update

What a beautiful day today! We finally got to play outside and clean up the yard a bit. Here’s an update on our compost, a few of you were asking…

See the plants growing from the potatoes? If you’re wondering how to start your own compost, I wrote a post about. Check it out.We haven’t used any of the “dirt” but I like doing the compost because it’s one less thing in the trash. We throw any veggies or fruit in there as well as egg shells and coffee filters/grinds. It’s amazing how little “trash” we throw away now.

  1. If you leave potatoes whole they will start to sprout and you will grow more potatoes. Learned that the hard way when I was little and thought I was helping mommy with her compost by throwing the old potatoes in there. My mom came in one day carrying a handful of potatoes that grew in there LOL. If you cut them up they are less likely to sprout. Though nothing wrong with them sprouting but also can be a sign that compost isn't warm enough. Which this time of year makes sense.

I compost by just throwing our food waste that my dogs won't eat into our leaf pile! Last year I had volunteer tomatoes and a pumpkin too!
