I Faced My Fear – Bridges!!

I’ve mentioned before that I have a fear of high bridges. I’m okay with low ones or even long ones, it’s the high ones that get me. Bridges and high over passes. They freak me out and I’m afraid I will go off and over the edge. I know it’s an irrational fear but it’s there just the same. I’ve gotten better over the last two years and am okay with someone else driving, sometimes.

My daughter and I are taking a trip tomorrow over to the Tampa/St. Pete area and the Sunshine State Bridge is over there and I may have to cross it. Here is a picture of the Sunshine State Bridge.

I had to cross that bridge seven years ago and was terrified! I made my mother drive over but it was still frightening.

So Friday, the first day of Spring Break for us, I gathered up the kids and we went driving north to the Dames Point Bridge in Jacksonville.

Both bridges are the same height but the Sunshine State Bridge is 10,000 feet longer.  So I drove and drove until I saw that bridge coming and I turned up the radio, made the air cooler and took a drink of water and I went over it!

But then I had to turn around and do it again! I pulled off the highway and sat for a few minutes and then made the drive back home. The second time was not as bad.

I definitely need more practice but I hope this will suffice for our trip tomorrow. Maybe I won’t even see the Sunshine State Bridge at all…. I can hope can’t I?

Do you have a fear of bridges?

  1. I have a fear of ledges so I can relate in a way. Go you for starting to conquer your fear! It can’t be easy and I love that you aren’t giving up.

  2. You can do it, fears are so good to conquer. I went on a zipline and was petrified!

  3. I can certainly understand the fear of high bridges. I’m not to fond of them either. I literally focus on the other side the whole time. Conquering fear is such a wonderful thing because then you no longer have a reason to be afraid of it.

  4. That’s great that you faced your fear! Unfortunately, I have an irrational fear of bridges, period. I think it’s mostly due to the fact that when I was a child, my mom got into a bad car wreck before crossing a bridge. I was in the car, but I barely got hurt, yet it scarred me for life. I have been scared of bridges ever since.

  5. You did awesome! It’s really hard facing your fears like that. I’m afraid of bridges, but more so going under them because I am afraid it’ll collapse on me.

  6. I am not a big fan of bridges either, especially long ones. Yay for conquering your fears!

  7. Awww — I’m so sorry that it was so scary but PROUD that you were able to conquer it.

  8. I have a fear of heights… freaks me out! Yay, you!

  9. When I was younger I was terrified of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco. It’s high and pretty long and every time I cross it I think we’re going to fall into the water.

  10. You go, girl! I’m not afraid of bridges. In fact, I always look forward to seeing the view as we cross the local bridges here (Bay Bridge, San Mateo-Hayward, Golden Gate).

  11. I hate bridges… long ones or tall ones!! There was this swing bridge we used to have to cross when I was younger and I think it’s what started my fear. There was this very tight circular road that lead you up to the bridge and then across and circular road down again. I’ve always (still do) had nightmares about that bridge!

  12. Nope, I like bridges! I just love the view. Good idea to do a little practicing before the big show!

  13. Good for you for facing your fear! Bridges don’t bother me so much because I usually feel safe. But in different circumstances heights do bother me.

How wonderful that you were able to do this. I bet your children are very proud of you. I don’t have a fear of bridges, but they scare me, especially draw bridges. BTW, I think it is quite a rational fear to have.

  15. Well I’ve really never had the opportunity to go over a really high bridge before, but I am scared of heights. We went in a hot air balloon ride this past summer and I was so terrified. I did it, but don’t want to do it again. LOL! Kudos to you for conquering your fears!

  16. I’m the opposite, I love bridges, especially the Brooklyn Bridge- it’s gorgeous!

  17. Good for you going out of your comfort zone. In order for us to grow, we must go beyond our comfort zone.

  18. Bridges don’t really bother me, but I could never imagine facing my biggest fear: birds. Just typing it makes me queasy!

  19. Congrats on facing your fear! I’m afraid of heights but bridges don’t bother me!

  20. Bridges don’t bother me, but maybe I’ve just never been on one that was tall enough. Good for you for facing your fear!

  21. WTG for facing one of your fears! Bridges can be pretty scary.
