What a beautiful day today! We finally got to play outside and clean up the yard a bit. Here’s an update on our compost, a few of you were asking…
See the plants growing from the potatoes? If you’re wondering how to start your own compost, I wrote a post about. Check it out.We haven’t used any of the “dirt” but I like doing the compost because it’s one less thing in the trash. We throw any veggies or fruit in there as well as egg shells and coffee filters/grinds. It’s amazing how little “trash” we throw away now.
If you leave potatoes whole they will start to sprout and you will grow more potatoes. Learned that the hard way when I was little and thought I was helping mommy with her compost by throwing the old potatoes in there. My mom came in one day carrying a handful of potatoes that grew in there LOL. If you cut them up they are less likely to sprout. Though nothing wrong with them sprouting but also can be a sign that compost isn't warm enough. Which this time of year makes sense.
I compost by just throwing our food waste that my dogs won't eat into our leaf pile! Last year I had volunteer tomatoes and a pumpkin too!
