If you haven’t heard yet, we are moving into a new home at the end of this month. Yes a new home! it’s so exciting!
Have you ever done the new home thing? You get to pick out your cabinets and carpet and light fixtures. It’s really fun, but also confusing and can it can get pricey too.
I don’t have a lot of choice in light fixtures, at least in my price range. I can’t see spending a fortune on wall lighting and hall lights. I picked ones that came with the house in a brushed metal. They were okay.
Well, I just got received some pictures from the builder and I’m pretty sure I’m going to want to change out my dining room chandelier.
What do you think?
Maybe it will look better in person….I want the one in the first picture!
I think the entrance and hall lights will be okay, but I would love some contemporary wall scones for the den or going up the stairs would create some cool wall lighting.
I was looking for alternative to my dining room chandelier and LampClick.com has some really cool lamps, scones and chandeliers! See what they have to offer!
The last time I did the new house thing was 18 years ago, and still in it! Wish I’d known then what I know now. Before I tackle lights, one word of advice. Make sure they put access panels for the plumbing in the bathrooms, especially if they’re upstairs. We had to cut a huge hole in both bedroom walls to get to that plumbing when it needed replacing! Ugh! Anyhoo, I’d vote to save money on light fixtures and go shopping at vintage or salvage stores, you can get really cool vintage pieces for half the price of the ones the builders offer or recommend and it’s neat to add those little touches that just scream personality! I’ve ended up replacing every single builder installed light fixture in my house over the last 18 years!
ohh, great idea about the vintage lighting! thanks!
Love your advise Donna! I’m taking notes!
I would go vintage, or check out pinterest for some awesome DIY fixtures.
I like the second one, actually 🙂 I am more traditional.
I’ve had way too many like your builder’s version in my homes. I’d be looking for something else too.
Yup head out and find some lighting, you can always find lighting on sale or better yet clearance!
there is always tons of options on clearance, I’m sure you can find one that you cannot pass up. I do like the 2nd picture better though if I HAD to choose between the two/
You should check out Layla Grayce. They have some fantastic options!
I like the first one too. I am trying to find a new ceiling light for my home office – I’ll check out that site 🙂
I like the first one much better too! It’s more modern which is more me.
My vote goes for he 2nd one. I don’t care so much for the modern look and feel. But everyone’s tastes are different. 🙂
I like the first one too!
I’m into a totally different type but I’d pick the 2nd.
I like the second one! I am moving at the end of the month, too!
good luck with your choices. I think they are all on personal preference. I’d do away with that chandelier too
I like the first one. I think those lamps help warm up a room.
Donna gave you some great advice. I’ve ended up replacing fixtures in almost every house I’ve been in. It’s a great way to really personalize your space. Knowing your personal style, I think the first fixture you pictured is better.
Something that POPS always works for me. I want to look at it and smile each time I see it.
I like the first one.
I LOVE the first one!!
I like the first one too!
I like the first one, too!
