I’ve always wanted my family involved in sports. I was not so involved and wish I had been. My youngest stepson played roller hockey, which is outdoor hockey, for years. It taught him sportsmanship and how to be a part of a team.

My son has played sports since he was 4 years old. He started playing soccer and then played baseball for years. He really loved it but wanted to venture into other sports. Over the years he has played basketball, flag football, football and lacrosse. He is currently playing baseball again.

My daughter is not as interested in sports. She does love to play baseball in the backyard and recently joined a running club at school. She also swam on the summer swim team last year and she agreed to sign up again this summer.

Sports has made a positive impact on my young athletes over the years. I am so glad we have encouraged them to play and that they like it!  There is potential in all of us.  No matter what you achieve in life, you start in the same place as everyone else:  as a kid full of potential and big dreams.  At the end of the day, we are all “just a kid” from somewhere. POWERADE believes that with the right motivation these everyday athletes can realize their potential and one day be the athletes that they look up to. Sports have a major impact on our communities. Whether it is t-ball or the pros, every athlete in every league has a story waiting to be told.

Here are some tips for your athletes:

Warm Up and Stretch Before Games and Practices
Stretching before practice and games can release muscle tension and help prevent sports-related injuries.

Wear Appropriate Sports Gear
Use appropriate and proprerly-fitted sports gear to prevent or reduce the severity of injuries.

Make sure your athlete drinks enough fluids.
Give your young athletes a sports drink to prevent fatigue and dehydration. Studies show that lightly sweetened, flavored, non-carbonated beverages, like POWERADE, do a better job than water of preventing dehydration.

The ION4® Advanced Electrolyte System helps replenish four electrolytes lost in sweat: sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. POWERADE is formulated with a 6% carbohydrate solution to help provide energy to working muscles, and vitamins B3, B6 and B12. POWERADE comes in great tasting flavors and has been helping keep athletes hydrated for decades.  POWERADE ZEROTM features the same hydration benefits of classic POWERADE but with ZERO calories. POWERADE flavors: Mountain Berry Blast®, Fruit Punch, Orange, Grape, Lemon Lime. POWERADE Zero flavors: Mixed Berry and Grape Zero

Optimize muscle recovery
Help young muscles recover fast – have your athlete eat and/or drink a high protein snack within 30 minutes after exercise

Remember pre-exercise meals
A pre-exercise meal is important to prevent hunger and to supply energy to athletes’ working muscles.
The night before competition and 2 hours before exercise: focus on carbs, moderate protein, low-fat foods and fluids (pasta with veggies and chicken, fruit, milk, cereal, yogurt, toast, juice).

Make Rest a Priority
Encourage athletes to tell coaches, parents or another adult about any pain, injury, or illness they may have during or after any practices or games.
