Over 90 Simon® properties will host the Caring Bunny this season. Promotional assistance for Caring Bunny has been provided by Autism Speaks.

On Sunday, March 6 from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., many steps will be taken to reduce sensory triggers, creating a more comforting environment for children’s cherished visit with the Bunny. The subdued environment is likely to include (specific elements or aesthetics may vary):

• Turning off in-mall music, stopping escalators located near the photo set, dimming the lights and shutting down fountains for the duration of the event.

• Eliminating queue lines through the use of a numbering system whereby guests approach the set when their number is called.

• Special activities geared toward the needs of the child during the ‘wait’ period to help the child understand what activities will occur during the visit.

Seminole County Blog Fam Trip #DoOrlandoNorth

We’ve driven to  Orlando from Jacksonville many times over the past 4 years. We always pass Sanford, FL and I never really thought much about it. I knew there was a small college town in Oviedo and a small airport but that’s about it.

cross-seminole- (1)
A few weeks ago Seminole County Tourism contacted me about coming to Sanford for a few days with my family to experience North Orlando and all it has to offer. The trip included myself, my husband and my two children.

I love learning about Florida and all the great towns here. Even though I was not born in Florida I’ve always felt like I was a true Florida girl.

I was excited to visit Orlando’s Natural Oasis, Seminole County. There are miles of rivers and acres of beautiful parks. Seminole County is conveniently located just north of Orlando, off Interstate 4 and close to Interstate 95 and Florida’s Turnpike. You are within 45 minutes of Florida’s Beaches or Disney. You will save a lot on hotels as apposed to the hub of downtown Orlando.

Day One of our adventure.

westin lobby

We checked into the Westin Lake Mary Hotel, who welcomed us bloggers and our families with complimentary rooms. The Westin Lake Mary Hotel offers a heated outdoor pool, landscaped courtyard, WestinWORKOUT® Fitness Studio and Westin Kids Club®. It was a bit chilly, so we were not able to try out the heated pool. The Westin Hotel is also a pet friendly hotel, we saw several dogs being escorted to and from their rooms. It offers a nice convention center, as well.

Seminole County Tourism, staff member, Stephanie and Terry and Mary Jane from Paradise Advertising were at the hotel to greet us with goody bags for each of the kids and one for myself and my husband. We went up to the room and unloaded our stuff and just relaxed for a few minutes before heading down to the lobby for our first adventure. All of us bloggers loaded in a 15 passenger van. It was so nice to be chauffeured around during the trip.

rebounderz
We headed over to Rebounderz of Apopka.  Rebounderz of Apopka has 26, 000 square feet of fun, including an open area arena, foam pit jumper, in the air dodgeball and a basketball slam.  The kids jumped and bounced for a little over an hour. Some of the other adults partaked in the fun as well but my husband I just watched. I was afraid I might hurt myself :-). As we got in the car we were offered snacks and water until we read your next destination.

hotpots
The next stop was to Hot Pots! Pottery Studio. I thought for sure my husband and my 15 year old son would not like painting pottery. Surprisingly, they both really enjoyed painting the pottery so much, they want to go again! When we arrived at Hot Pots! we were greeted cheerfiully and we were told we could pick anything from their stock. We chose a tee light candle holder,  a dog dish, an alligator and a soup bowl.  Everyone had a great time and we can’t wait to receive our glazed pottery in the next week or two.

After we were done we headed back to the hotel for a 45 minute rest. Then it was off to dinner.
gatorsdockside

Dinner was at Gator’s Dockside restaurant. Gator’s has a family-friendly atmosphere, the mouth-watering menu items and the fun, casual dining experience that makes Gator’s Dockside your favorite place to be.
Gators dockside offers a wide variety of food from hamburgers, chicken, fish  and even Gator bites. They also have big screen TV’s, pool tables and video games. There are 19 Gator’s Dockside restaurants in Florida.

minigolf
After we ate dinner we headed over to Congo River Adventures, in Altamonte Springs, for a game of miniature golf. My family loves mini golf so we were really excited to be able to play. I love when the golf courses have hills and water and lots of fun scenes and this Congo River didn’t disappoint. Congo River Adventure has a mobile app to keep score. No more looking for that little pencil!

After mini golf it was back to the hotel to get a good nights sleep.

See what happens on Day Two!

The first annual Disney Reads Day at The Avenues will take place on Saturday, February 6! The interactive event will include Disney cast member visits and read-aloud sessions at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. In addition to reading with their favorite characters, participants will enjoy coloring stations and arts and crafts. Come on in and let story time begin! Journey into a world of imagination, and receive a free giveaway from Disney Story Central while supplies last. Story time begins at 10:30 am on February 6, 2016 in Center Court. For each book purchased at The Disney Store on 02/06/2016, First Book will direct a book donated by Disney, up to 250,000 books, to an organization in the region where the purchase was made. To learn more information, visit the Disney Store in The Avenues Mall.

Today, Disney announced that it will donate its 50 millionth book to First Book, a nonprofit that provides new books to educators and organizations serving children from low-income families. To celebrate this milestone, Disney and ABC are inviting consumers to join the fourth annual Magic of Storytelling campaign through a number of activities between now and March 31, 2016, including the first annual Disney Reads Day on February 6, 2016.

The Magic of Storytelling campaign is a collaboration between Disney Publishing Worldwide and Disney|ABC Television Group to help First Book put brand new books into the hands of children in communities nationwide. The campaign features a public service announcement, special events, an extensive media campaign, social media activations and a 50-State online challenge.

The inaugural Disney Reads Day on February 6 will kick off four weeks of events and special promotions at participating retailers and other organizations, including story time events at Disney Store’s 180 U.S. locations, to raise awareness of the importance of reading.

“The Magic of Storytelling campaign celebrates all the ways that a love for reading benefits a child’s life. We’re tremendously grateful to have a partner in Disney that shares these same beliefs,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “This year is especially thrilling as Disney donates its 50 millionth book through First Book. We hope communities nationwide join us in our efforts to raise awareness of the importance of reading.”

The Magic of Storytelling campaign will feature a public service announcement (PSA) voiced by Steven Spielberg, Director of The Walt Disney Studios upcoming film adaptation of “The BFG,” based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl, coming to theaters on July 1, 2016. Created to celebrate storytelling and underscore the importance of reading, the PSA will be shared with audiences across Disney including ABC affiliate stations, ABC Network, ABC Family (soon to be renamed Freeform on January 12, 2016), Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Disney Store, Disney Cruise Line and Disney Resorts’ TVs, the ABC Watch app, and more. Additionally, each local ABC-owned station will donate 5,000 books to their local communities through schools and organizations in their respective markets.

“Storytelling is at the heart of everything we do,” said Leslie Ferraro, co-chair, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media and president, Disney Consumer Products. “Great stories change lives, unleash imaginations and foster creativity. We are incredibly proud of our ongoing, long-standing partnership with First Book and the work they have done to bring books to kids in need, and we look forward to sharing the Magic of Storytelling and Disney Reads Day with families and fans.”

Consumers are encouraged to participate and share the magic of storytelling through a number of ways:

  • In-Store Events: Consumers are invited to celebrate Disney Reads Day at participating retailers and Disney Store locations, which will feature family-friendly events and activities including story time. A full list of all Disney Store locations and participating retailers is available at firstbook.org/BeInspired.
  • Book Donation: For each eligible book consumers purchase at a Disney Store or other participating locations on February 6, 2016, a book will be donated to an organization in the region where the purchase was made, up to 250,000 books. A full list of all Disney Store locations and participating retailers is available at firstbook.org/BeInspired.
  • Social Media: Consumers can also participate by posting a “shelfie” – a selfie with a favorite book or in front of a bookshelf. For each shelfie posted to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #MagicOfStorytelling, First Book will direct a book donated by Disney to an organization in need, up to 500,000 books.

You Stink and They Know It! – A practical guide to nailing your next job interview.

MS7A4095

Why did I choose that as the title of my book?

It stemmed from the frustration I saw in friends, family, and peers who couldn’t seem to land that new career opportunity.  They had self-doubt, don’t we all?  If you break down the interview process, essentially you are going into a room full of strangers to explain to them why, out of ALL of the candidates, you are a perfect fit for this position.  You have 30-60 minutes, GO!

Nerve-wracking!!!

“I’m not good enough, I don’t have an MBA, I don’t have enough experience, etc.”

STOP!!!  I can help.  What makes me qualified?

  • I’ve facilitated countless interviews from entry level to executive.
  • I’ve written interview questions, giving me keen insight into what employers are looking for in your response.
  • I’ve successfully mentored individuals through the interview, offer, and counter-offer process.
  • I’ve successfully applied the techniques I outline in my book throughout my career.

The 5 things you MUST do to nail that job interview

While my book goes into more detail, below are 5 musts if you want to secure that coveted career opportunity.

  1. Do your research!  You should be intricately familiar with the position you are applying.  What are the skills needed to excel in this role?  Knowing what skills are needed will help you prepare your interview question responses.  For example, if all of your current experience is in customer service and you are going for a position that requires little face-to-face time with customers (more clerical); your response to interview questions should highlight a skill-set you possess that directly relates to the companies need.

You should also be up to speed on the company itself. Look at industry trends, financials, technology, etc.  I interviewed with a large bank for a position in their mortgage department and because of my research, was able to engage in some small-talk about mortgage standards and government regulations that hit the headlines recently.  It was a great ice-breaker and I landed the position.  I had ZERO mortgage experience on my résumé!

     2. Dress to impress!  If you look good, you feel good.  If you feel good, you act with more confidence.  Confidence goes a long way when making a first impression.  Some studies have shown that interviewers have made a hiring decision within minutes of meeting you, make those minutes count!

  3. Prepare relentlessly! You should be prepared to talk about YOU!  They are not hiring your résumé, they are hiring you.  They are not hiring your    experience; they are hiring you and your skills. You should be intricately familiar with YOU. Review the below bullet points and BE THOROUGHLY PREPARED to discuss the details of the following.

My book contains worksheets to aid in the identification of your core strengths.

  • What are your strengths?  (Prepare 3-5 to discuss)
  • What are your strongest skill-sets? Why?
  • How have you applied those skills to a recent situation?
  • What was the outcome?
  • What are your areas of opportunity?  (Weaknesses, although you’ll refer to them as ‘an area of opportunity’)  Always avoid negative language.
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY, what are you doing to develop that area?

4. Answer the interview questions.  Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Frequently, interview questions start with, “Tell me about a time when you…. [Led a team through conflict, etc.].”  I’ve experienced success (and those I’ve mentored) using the STAR method.  Situation, Task, Action, Result.  This technique has been around for some time, but is certainly not leveraged enough.

  • Begin your response with describing the situation.
  • Outline for the interviewers the various tasks you identified that needed to happen to be successful.
  • Describe, in detail, the actions you took as you progressed towards achieving the end result.  Be sure to include the skills/tactics you used to drive results.
  • Finally, end your response with the results of your efforts.

MS7A4041

Below is an example, as seen on pages 39-41 of my book.

Interviewer:  “Tell me about a time when you had to motivate your team to achieve a goal they did not believe was attainable.”

Candidate:  “That’s a great question, and all too common.  I had a team of ten associates and a newly established sales goal of twenty-five units per month for each associate, five more per associate than they had ever achieved.  The team was vocal about not being able to achieve that goal.  In order to motivate the team to exceed the expectations, I called a team meeting and asked that they help in creating a team action plan for success.

We discussed the following:

  • Number of sales needed per day, per associate
  • A list of perceived roadblocks to achieving that goal
  • A list of best sales practices from each associate
  • Ideas of fun games to play during the day to celebrate each sale
  • A regular schedule to follow up on our progress

The meeting ended with a clear understanding of our daily goal, the sharing of best practices from each associate, now documented in a central location for all to access when needed, associate ownership of fun sales games to play during the day, and a set in stone follow up schedule to track our progress.

The result was the realization of an achievable daily goal, increased sales skills through best practice sharing, increased accountability, and the now anticipated follow up meeting to share progress.  Lastly, it created a sense of team and unity.  We ended up hitting 105% of our sales goal and ranked 2 out of 18 sales teams in our department!”

5. Follow-up! I recommend a hand-written note mailed to each interviewer.  The lost art of a hand-written letter will go a long way.  Keep it brief, thanking the interviewers for the opportunity to discuss the position.  Mail it immediately after your interview.  This typically works well with a smaller company.  I’ve found email to work better with larger companies.  If you don’t have the interviewers contact information, email the recruiter and ask them to forward your appreciation.

Good companies will contact you before you have a chance to follow-up with them.  I once had a company call me to schedule a second interview as I pulled out of the parking lot immediately after finishing my initial interview!

If you haven’t heard from them, place a follow up call 48-72 hours after your interview.  Be polite, direct, and clear.  Your communication should simply state who you are, who you met with, and that you are excited to hear about the opportunity.  You should also let them know that you are willing to meet again if they have any additional questions.

Finally, CELEBRATE!  You prepared for and NAILED your job interview!  That takes courage and dedication.
