Take Your Kitchen Into the Future!

Wikipedia

A lot of people seem to assume that the kitchen hasn’t changed much over the years. And perhaps there’s an element of truth to that. After all, it’s not as if the actual function of the kitchen has changed at all! But, in fact, how we do things in the kitchen has changed in many ways. How we decorate our kitchens has also made major changes over the years. We now look to make our kitchens the hub of the home and decorate it with bright, modern lighting and art such as this girls neon sign. Perhaps people were expecting us to have robots that would prepare our meals for us by now. Heck, there were people who assumed we’d be eating all of our meals in pill forms by the year 2000. I guess we wouldn’t have needed a kitchen at all if things had turned out that way!

But the modern family is as interested in good food preparation than ever. Not only that, but we’re a lot more concerned about the effect our kitchen has on the environment. So a lot of the changes have been leaning more in these directions. Our kitchen activities haven’t changed that radically, nor are they going to change that radically in the future. But there’s no denying that change is happening in the kitchen.

We’re going to take a look at some of the amazing advances in kitchen technology. We’re going to focus on things that affect the things modern kitchen dwellers are mostly in interested in. These areas concern quality, time, health, and the environment!

Invasion of the Internet of Things!

The Internet of Things is probably a term you’ve heard or seen while browsing the Internet. But what exactly is it? To put it briefly, it refers to the installation of Internet capabilities in our everyday objects. Of course, most households nowadays have a trustworthy internet provider, such as Viasat internet, in their homes in order to make this possible. These objects will track certain data, then send that data to another device. The vast majority of the time, this will involve your smartphone.

A very popular example of this in the realm of the kitchen has, of course, to do with coffee. It’s also where the Internet of Things in the kitchen becomes really involved. We’ve been using coffee machines in the kitchen for decades, right? And they didn’t really change much in all of that time. But not you can get a coffee machine that has WiFi capabilities. At a press of a button on your smartphone, your coffee machine will get your brew going!

But it can get even more involved in that. Some of these WiFi coffee machines connect to activity trackers. If you wear one of these on your wrist while you sleep, then all sorts of information is being recorded during the night. This information can actually track how well you’ve slept. If you didn’t get enough sleep, then the coffee machine adjusts the strength of your morning brew!

This, of course, is just one example. Slow cookers, dishwashers, refrigerators, and even trash cans are featuring this sort of technology! The Internet of Things is certainly on a mission to take over the kitchen.

Thinking green

There are loads of advances that are taking the environment into account. While a lot of the technology here isn’t as flashy as some of the others, they are representative of our most “futuristic” mindset. After all, a full understanding of what our everyday activities do to the environment is a very modern thing. Just a couple of decades ago, many would never have predicted we’d ever care all that much!

The kitchen is no longer where the bulk of our energy use comes from, especially in very modern home. Nevertheless, a large portion of our energy and carbon footprints are created there. This is why its so important for us to “get with the times” when it comes to new kitchen appliances and technology.

For a lot of people, this means investing in induction cooking. While there are, of course, pros and cons to induction cooking, it is incredibly energy efficient. It’s been around for decades, but recently the demand has increased. This means that prices have been driven down, and the selection has gone up. It’s one of the must-haves when it comes to the modern kitchen. If you combine it with the right induction cookware, then you’ve got an incredibly powerful and efficient setup!

Gadgets that help reduce water output are also becoming a lot more popular these days. Thankfully, a lot of these aren’t really high-tech! (Which basically translates to “they’re very low-cost!”.) If you think about it, the amount of water you need for any given task is such a small amount of what we actually use. This is rarely something we can help. The nature of the water flow means that more than we need is always used. But advanced thinking is coming to the rescue! There are advanced faucet aerators you can install onto your kitchen tap that dissipates the water you use. This creates a high amount of moisture while using only 2-5% of the water you would otherwise have used!

Health in the kitchen

When we think about health in the kitchen, we generally think about two things. We consider the nutritional value of what we’re preparing and eating in the kitchen. We also think about things from a hygienic perspective. After all, the kitchen tends to have more harmful bacteria in it than any other room in the house!

kitchen-193981_1280

Pixabay

You can get a device that acts as both scales and a preparation surface. That, of course, isn’t the high-tech part. It also quantifies the nutritional value of whatever you’re preparing! This is actually part of the expanding “Internet of Things”. It can connect to your smartphone or tablet to help you keep track of your nutrition from day to day.

As for hygiene, the trick is in making sure you clean everything properly, right? But, of course, the age-old problem is that you can’t actually see most of the harmful bacteria in your kitchen. It can be hard to tell whether or not your cleaning has actually done the trick. This is where something like the Verilux sanitizing wand. It helps makes that bacteria easier to see, as well as easier to clean. It actually looks like something that’s more befitting an episode of CSI!

Nocatee M Shack Restaurant Review @MShackBurgers

M-Shack-300x179

I always get excited to hear of a new restaurant opening here in Nocatee. More food options is always a good thing. I have heard many friends speak highly of M Shack located at St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville. Everyone raves of their burgers and shakes. I didn’t get a chance to try out the Jacksonville location, however I was happy when I learned of one being built right here in my neighborhood. I had the chance to take my family to the new Nocatee location and review some of the food on their menu.

Welcome to M Shack, a collaboration by the Medure brothers – Matthew & David – fusing the old fashioned burger joint with style and fresh ingredients. M Shack burgers are made with all natural, hormone-free beef ground fresh daily. Juicy, all beef hot dogs, hand-cut fries, mouth-watering milk shakes and more help complete their unique menu.

M Shack currently has 4 restaurants, with the newest one being in Nocatee that opened this summer. The new Nocatee location seats 75 indoors, with additional patio seating for 50. When you walk in you can grab a menu at the counter and decide what you would like to order. Once you decide you order right at the counter, grab a table number, and sit down and wait for your food to be brought to your table. They have a great variety of items on the menu to order. They have a full bar as well with beer on tap and “Adult”spiked milkshakes. Overall the restaurant has a very nice atmosphere.

Food that we reviewed:

IMG_4379

IMG_4378

Small sized Cookies and Creak Milkshake ($4.00) and Small sized Marshmallow Brûlée ($4.00). My daughter ordered the Cookies and Cream and my son ordered the Marshmallow Brûlée. Both of them raved about how they tasted, and I must agree. I tried both and honestly was hesitant to give them back! They tasted amazing! We even got to see the bartender torch the top of he Marshmallow Brûlée shake just like they do to Creme Brûlée. As you can see in the pictures, 2 thumbs ups for M Shack shakes!!

IMG_4381

Build your own burger is priced starting at $4.25 for a single patty which I ordered. Options are a single patty, double patty, turkey, salmon, crab cake, veggie or marinated chicken.  They have free toppings such as lettuce, tomato, raw onion, pickles, banana peppers and more. There are also additional toppings you can get for a small charge. I ordered my single patty with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, and Avocado which was an additional charge of 95 cents. Worth every penny since they did pile on the Avocado! I ordered my burger as medium well and it was cooked perfectly. The burger was nice and juice and tasted amazing.

IMG_4384

Swamp Burger ($7.50)  is a signature beef patty topped with pulled pork, house made BBQ sauce, pickles, swiss cheese and a ranch coleslaw. My husband was craving pulled pork so once he was this burger on the menu he knew it was for him. He ordered his medium and it came out cooked perfectly. He said the BBQ sauce paired with the ranch coleslaw gave it a delicious flavor. He can’t wait to order this burger again.

IMG_4380

We ordered a side of Taco Fries ($6.50) to go with our burgers. These are friend with house made queso, sour cream, chili, bacon, scallions, fritos® and house-made pico. We have never had fries like this before, they were so good! Even my kids loved them. The size was perfect for sharing between my husband, myself and 2 kids. The chili was delicious and give you plenty of it!

IMG_4382

Off the Tiny Tots menu my daughter ordered the Grilled Cheese ($3.25) which has classic and american cheese on potato bread.  She said it was very tasty and gooey with cheese. It was a good size to0.

IMG_4383

Off the Tiny Tots menu my son ordered the Hebrew National All-Beef Dog ($3.50) on toasted bun. My son is currently addicted to hot dogs and said this one was one of the best he has had. It was a good size and nice and juicy.

All of the items are A la carte, so they do not come with a side. They do have a variety of sides you can order including tator tots, onion rings, fries and more.

All of the food was delicious that we reviewed,  and we definitely will be back. I am very happy that M Shack is here in the neighborhood and look forward to returning with my family to enjoy another meal and seeing some of my neighbors.

Check out their full menu to see what items they have to offer.

“Shop With Your Heart” initiative from the ASPCA

This is a guest post.

shop-with-your-heart-mockup-header-v1_0
Aside from the people who are vegan, most everyone I know buys meat, eggs, or dairy at some point during the week/month/year. And those of you who do – have much more buying power than you probably even realize. By buying welfare-certified animal products, or more plant-based products, you send a strong message to food companies that you care about the treatment of farm animals.
Just an average size family spends hundreds of dollars a month on meat. Imagine if every
single consumer used that buying power to purchase welfare-certified meat instead of the meat from inhumane factory farms. What a difference that would make!
<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/voexPcQ96Ho” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>
As you may already know, most of the nearly 9 billion animals raised for meat, milk and eggs in the US are suffering in inhumane factory farms. And animals are not the only affected, as factory farms impact human health—they can be breeding grounds for dangerous pathogens and the antibiotics used to prevent disease create the potential for dangerous, drug-resistant bacteria to develop.
To fully harness the power of our collective purchases and demand better lives for farm animals, the Shop With Your Heart initiative launched by the ASPCA gives consumers the resources to recognize, locate and demand meaningfully welfare-certified meat, eggs and dairy products as well as plant-based alternatives.
Will you take the pledge?
Everyone who signs the pledge also gains access to an exclusive Shop With Your Heart Grocery List, including welfare-certified and widely available plant-based brands.
Make Heart Hands for Farm Animals!
Pose with your hands in a heart shape and post a photo using the tag #shopwithyourheart and @ASPCA to let your friends know you believe in a more humane world for farm animals. Don’t forget to tell them where you shop to find more humane products—give the stores a shout-out by tagging them, too!

6 Immunity-Boosting Foods

If you are looking for a way to boost your immunity so you don’t have to worry about fighting off so many colds and germs, you may need to take a look at your diet. Certain foods have the power to heal your body and can do some amazing things for your health. If you are ready to start experiencing the magic of foods, here are some tips just for you.

1. Apples

At this point in your life, you should be familiar with the phrase “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” This is not just a popular saying, it is true. Many studies have been done throughout the years to prove that apples can have a significant and positive effect on your health. Don’t stop at eating apples, add more fruits into your diet like grapes, oranges, bananas, kiwis, blueberries, and strawberries.

2. Elderberry

Elderberry supplement products, like Private label Elderberry, have been around for many years and are beneficial for the world we live in. With the common flu or diseases like Covid-19, boosting your immune system, naturally is one of the best preventative measures you can take. Elderberries are known for being rich in different vitamins and minerals like Potassium & Vitamins C, B6 and A. Use this for immune boosting potentials.

3. Garlic

Garlic is not just a tasty vegetable, it is also a spice that can be used to liven up the blandest of meals. When eaten regularly, you can increase your immunity with it because it makes it possible for your body to produce natural killer cells faster. Killer cells are what your body uses to help fight off diseases and germs. Add more garlic into your diet to enjoy better immunity all year, especially during the colder months when viruses and the flu tend to run rampant.

4. Chicken Noodle Soup

This comfort food has been used for centuries as a cure-all for the common cold and other ailments. Chicken noodle soup has scientifically been proven to help boost immunity, especially in times of stress. Its health properties enable it to stop inflammatory white cells from accumulating and moving throughout your body. Inflammatory white cells can lead to respiratory issues, such as bronchitis and colds. The soup also helps to thin out the mucous in your nasal passages to relieve congestion so you can breathe easier.

 5. Mushroom Supplements

Mushroom supplements from websites like Nature’s Happiness contain different fungi that are associated with a wide range of health benefits, from strengthening the immune system to increasing a person’s productivity and reducing inflammation.

Adding mushroom supplements to your diet helps decrease the risk of developing various health conditions. Each mushroom strain has its own unique properties that can be used on its own or combined together with other fungi to help improve energy levels and boost focus — making you feel great.

6. Tea

Certain teas are full of antioxidants that help your body to fight off free radicals and other toxic, cancer-causing agents. Black, green, and other types of teas can also help your body to fight off viruses. Of course, you’ll need to drink several cups of tea each day to enjoy those benefits.

7. Probiotics

Contrary to what you believe, all bacteria is not harmful to your health. Probiotics are a healthy kind of bacteria that are normally found in your digestive system. Since your body contains both good and bad types of bacteria, you’ll need to work on maintaining a good balance. Probiotics are not just inside of your body, they can also be found in certain foods and supplements.
Your digestive system plays an important role in your immune system. It is responsible for breaking down, processing, and absorbing nutrients from the foods you eat. When the number of bad bacteria overtake the amount of good kind, you may start to experience poor digestive health, weight gain, lack of energy, and a whole host of issues that indicate your immune system and digestive health is off track. Prevent these issues from happening by eating a fair amount of dairy products, such as yogurts, cheese, and other plant-based foods or by taking Bio Complete 3 probiotics.

8. Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that your body can’t make on its own, so you need to get it from your diet or supplements. You can take a supplement such as methyl b12, which is fast acting and helps to lift mood and support your energy levels. Alternatively, some commons foods that contain Vitamin B-12 are:

  • Cheese.
  • Milk.
  • Yogurt.
  • Eggs.
  • Beef And Lamb.
  • Shellfish.
  • Breakfast Cereals.

9. Seafood

Wild caught fish, such as salmon, sardines, and tuna are loaded with protein and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients can work wonders for your immune system. The protein helps to provide your body with a good source of fuel and the fatty acids help to protect your cells against damage and disease. It is important for you to understand that all fish and seafood are not the same. While it is okay for you to load up on salmon and tuna, you should try to steer clear of fish that is raised locally and on farms.
There are plenty of foods that you can use to boost your immune system’s function. Depending on your health, it may be necessary for you to take supplements to get the level of nutrients you need to enjoy good health. Before you rush out to purchase anything, check with your doctor and make sure you research supplement manufacturers first. Don’t forget to double check the dosage amounts. Even though you may resort to using supplements, they should not be used as a substitute for real food. You should try to get everything you need from your diet first, before you resort to the use of supplements to get the nutrients you are lacking.
