Green Living Tip – Use What You Have!

I had to ship out a prize a few weeks ago and had no box. I was looking around and came up with an idea. I took an old cereal box and opened it up all the way. I basically turned the box inside out.

Then I just taped it back up and viola! A box I can use to ship in.

I was so excited!

Have you reused anything lately?

Green Living Tip – Make Your Own Bread Crumbs

My hubby loves to use bread crumbs to bake our chicken. He always bought Italian Bread Crumbs from the store. Then I started getting into blogging and reading about going green and being frugal and I found others that made their own bread crumbs, so I decided to try it. It’s been almost 3 years now and I’m still making my own.

It’s super easy to do too!

Dry out any bread, garlic bread, bagels, rolls, until nice and dry. Usually a few days. I do recommend breaking them up first. Then place them in a blender and blend away!

You may want to only do a little at a time, in the blender. I then add Italian seasoning, garlic salt and onion powder and store in a plastic baggie in the freezer.

My hubby wasn’t that into it in the beginning but now he proudly says, “My wife makes her own bread crumbs!”

Green Living Tip – Wash Those Bags!!

I questioned my dad recently as to why he didn’t use reusable bags. He mentioned something about not ever washing the bags and how many germs the bags themselves carry. So I decided to wash mine – all of them.

It was super easy! Just take out the plastic bottoms and throw into the washer. Wash in the delicate or hand washing cycle and hang to dry. You can see some of mine above. When they were dry, I put the bottoms back in and folded. Good as new!!

I will do this more often now that I know I can.

Do you wash your bags?

Simple Green Review and Giveaway

Today is Earth Day and what better way to celebrate Mother Earth than with a “green” Giveaway?

I have a Simple Green Garage Prize Pack to giveaway to one Mommy Has to Work reader.

I received a Simple Green Garage Pack as well to review. Included is the Simple Green Car Wash, Extreme Simple Green Motorsports Cleaner/Degreaser, Simple Green Hand Cleaner Gel and a Simple Green Scrubbing Pad.

I love to wash my car. Of course I use as little water as possible. It’s a fun to do this with kids too and we all get a little wet. The Car Wash was was the first thing out of the box. Works wonderful and smells great too!

And the Simple Green Hand Cleaner gel works great too! My husband used it and liked the way it took the grease off and the smell is kinda minty. Which is cool, I like mint.

Did you know that Simple Green originally started out “in the garage”? 30 years ago a father and son wanted to make a safer alternative to the toxic cleaners used to clean coffee roaster machines. After 3 years of perfecting Simple Green, they started selling their products to automotive and industrial customers. Now Simple Green has a large variety of products and they are sold everywhere. They’ve come a long way.

Last year I tried the Simple Green Household products and LOVED them!

Guest Post – Going Green Day by Day

This is a guest post.

What Does It Take to Go Green Day by Day?

By now, we are all more than familiar with the importance of going green, but what does it mean to your daily life? If you truly want to begin to make a difference and reduce your carbon footprint, here are a few important ideas to lend a helping hand to the environment each and every day: · Start composting! Did you know that you can do something as simple as reusing your coffee grounds in your garden to recycle and compost? Coffee grounds are highly beneficial because they are acidic to promote healthy plant growth, and it is also a quick and helpful way to reduce landfill waste.

Stop running your faucets. When you start to pay attention to how often you leave water running, you may be surprised at how much water you are wasting each and every day. Make it a priority to turn off water any time that you are not using it, and only run your dishwasher when it is completely full.

Stop smoking. Not only is quitting smoking great for your health, but it also reduces air pollution due to second-hand smoke. When you quit smoking, you will protect you and your family’s health for the long run.

Eat more locally grown, organic foods. Foods that are not grown organically cause serious pollution, and in many areas, tropical rain forests are cut down to raise cattle. You can make a long-term difference by eating locally grown foods that are also organic, as well as reducing how much meat that you eat. As an added bonus, this will also greatly improve your health!

Regulate your thermostat. By raising your thermostat in the hot summer months and lowering your thermostat slightly in the winter, you will save energy all year long. This will also help to reduce overall pollution, so turn on the fans in the summer and wear an additional sweater in the winter to protect the environment.

Use alternate transportation. Interestingly enough, when you start to bicycle, walk, or even take a carpool, you will seriously reduce pollution and waste. On top of that, when you use alternative methods like walking or bicycling, you will also be able to naturally burn extra calories within your day to lose weight! You may have noticed a common theme with all of the eco-friendly tips above. Once you start giving back to protect the environment, you will also automatically protect your health and even lose weight while you’re at it. Win-win!
