The Parental Panic – 6 Ways to Reduce Stress as a Single Parent

This may sound like fake news – tips to reduce stress as a single parent might appear to be contradictory or an anomaly but there are ways in which you can help ease the stress levels and smooth the waters while you sail through parenthood on your small raft for one. Sometimes, or perhaps more than you would like, it can all seem too much; here are a few things you can try to ease the stress and focus on the joys of parenting.

Give Yourself Room To Be Your Own Person

Raising a child is hard, and finding the time and money to do it right can be difficult and stressful for a single parent. It’s important that you remember that you are still your own person. You’re not just a mum or dad, but you have your own identity and needs. As such, you should be making time, at least once a week for yourself to go out and be you.

Whether that’s to go out on a date or catch friends for a drink, or to just take yourself out to an art gallery or movie. Give yourself that time, contact a nanny agency in Melbourne, or find a relative that can help out at least one day or night a week to give you some space to be you.

Establish a Routine

Having a set routine that determines what is happening when each day is a good way to ease the stress of figuring everything out on the run. Having set meals for each night is also a good way to shop in a cost-effective manner and give you one less decision to worry about each night.

This doesn’t have to be boring and the same every week, but setting out a meal plan before you do your groceries is a great way to ease the stress of the night time sprint from getting home to getting your child to bed.

Enforce Rules

Similarly to establishing a routine, remaining consistent with rules and discipline is beneficial to you and your child. Sometimes you might not have the energy to argue, but remaining consistent with rules on snacks, bedtimes, screen time and everything else all go a long way to giving your child stability – which will make them happier and easier to deal with.

If you are divorced or separated, then work with your partner to establish consistent rules. Your child shouldn’t have two sets of rules and regulations to live by, it’s confusing for them and creates more stress for everyone. We all like knowing where we stand.

Remember They Are Your Child

Sometimes when single parents are alone and doing it tough, they can fall into the trap of becoming emotionally reliant on their child for support, companionship or sympathy. Generally speaking, children don’t have the capacity to act as a substitute adult, and besides, you have to allow your child to be a kid.

Don’t burden them with this at their young age, allow them to have fun and play and see the world as the beautiful, magical place that it can be.

Make Time To Be Present With Your Child

There may be a million chores to do, food to prepare, bills to pay and everything else that goes with being a single parent, but it’s essential that you still take the time out to just be present with your child and enjoy each other’s company.

Leave that load of washing for later, and go out for a walk, or talk to each other while listening to music, draw and paint; whatever it is that you enjoy doing together, take the time to do that and to be completely present and in the moment with them.

Welcome Each Day

Find a way to make a positive start to each day.

Whether that’s by going for an early jog followed by a cold shower, or waking up and putting some music on while you prepare a nice breakfast; start each day with a smile on your face and bounce in your step.

Try not to get in the habit of rolling out of bed at the last minute to throw on clothes and rush out the door. That is a horrible start to the day and that mood will carry you through until you finally get some time to yourself at night. Set the alarm earlier, get up and welcome the day.

Take the time to look after yourself. There’s no point working yourself into a frenzy and becoming a walking ball of stress. Of course it’s difficult, but rather than focusing on what you’re lacking or what problems you have, try counting your blessings each day – starting with your child.

Do you love Wine? Try out a Wine Subscription from Winc! @usfg

Do you love Wine? Do you love trying different red and white wines to see what you like? If your answers are yes, then I have found something perfect for you. A wine subscription from Winc!

How it works:

Winc connects you to a world of exclusive wines tailored to your tastes and offers wine delivery right to your door. Answer six questions to help Winc access your unique tastes and then they send you wines specifically chosen to match your palate. When you are done trying them, rate them to get better recommendations on your next order. Satisfaction is guaranteed, if you do not like the wine sent to you they will refund you. Members can skip a month anytime free of charge. There is also no commitment. If you tried it and feel it isn’t for you just call or chat with Winc to cancel. Also, the more wines you receive and rate..the more wine credits you will receive for future orders! Bottles start at just $13 each.

I answered my 6 questions and was paired with 4 wines. I prefer sweet white wines over red wines, so what I love is you can choose a variety combination of reds and whites. For example, I chose to receive 3 white and 1 red. You can also choose 2 white and 2 red or 3 red and 1 white etc. I really like having that option.  I was then shown which wines were picked for me. You can click each option and it will show you all of the info on that particular wine such as body, sweetness amount and alcohol content. It will also give you food pairing suggestions.

I love really sweet white wines and was disappointed they did not offer me a sweet Moscato which is my favorite.  So, I decided on 2 Rose, a white blend and a fruity red wine. Checkout was simple and I received a nice $22 discount with the code I will provide you all.

I received many status emails and even texts about my order which kept me in the loop. Make sure someone at least 21 years old will be home to sign for your order. I received my wines super fast. They were packaged securely and were in perfect condition. I was pleasantly surprised to see that a Winc Journal and a Welcome to Winc book were included in my order. The book tells you all about different types of wines, and the Journal of the month gives you lots of recipes, pairings and information, Both were very helpful!

In conclusion, I am very happy with this subscription service and the wines I was sent. I do however wish they offered more options of wine to choose from.  This would make a great holiday gift for someone in your life that loves wine. I will definitely be ordering again.

The Correct Way to Measure for Blinds and Shades

As far as screening is concerned, the traditional curtain has served us well, yet the trend has shifted towards blinds in the past decade, mainly because of the many advantages this type of screening offers. Bespoke solutions are no longer the exclusive right of the wealthy, and today’s blinds are easy to fit, providing they are fabricated to the right dimensions, and with that in mind, here is a guide to measuring interior blinds.

  • Mount Type – A blind can be mounted on the inside or the outside of the window aperture, and while both are attractive, it is down to personal choice. The inside mount is attached to the top of the window reveal with brackets and screws, and therefore the blind is very close to the glass. If, for example, you wanted to get made to measure vertical blinds, prior to looking at designs, you would first need to decide on the mounting type. Inner mounts are more popular, as they block out all the light, and unless the window reveal is too narrow or there are obstacles, mounting the blinds in the reveal is a preferred option.
  • Multi-Point Width Measurement – Assuming you are going with an inside mounted blind, you must measure the width of the window reveal in 3 places, namely the bottom, middle and top. Write these 3 measurements on a piece of paper and circle the lowest, which is going to be the size you give the online supplier. Don’t worry that the blinds will scrape the sides of the window reveal, as the manufacturer will make some minor deductions to allow for this. There is a step by step guide online to measuring for an inside mount, which goes into great detail and lists the necessary tools.
  • Multi-Point Height Measurement – As with the width, measure the height in 3 places and take the smallest measurement. From the top of the window reveal to the top of the window sill will give you a precise measurement for the manufacturer, and they will make the necessary adjustments.
  • Outside Mounted Measurement – When measuring the width, it is generally the rule to allow two or three inches on either side, which gives a balanced look, and allow 3 or 4 inches at the top for the attachment. The brackets can either be fixed directly to the wall or on a trim that is mounted to keep the blind away from the wall, and for the height, you should measure from the very top of the overhead trim to 3 or 4 inches below the sill.

Made to measure units allow for a perfect fit, and with online suppliers, all you need to do is follow the above instructions and your new blinds will fit like a glove. The range of designs is virtually unlimited, so you can add some colour and depth by choosing something suitable, and with precise manufacturing, you won’t have to make any adjustments. The above measurement system is used by all blind manufacturers, and they will make the necessary adjustments to allow for a small clearance between blind and window reveal.
