Summer is here! Lots of outdoor time with family, which means lots of time in the sun. The sun can be very damaging to your skin, so you need to take certain measures to protect it.

Anne and I recently had the opportunity to tour Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery (PVPS), the very beautiful new Nocatee location here in Ponte Vedra. When I heard of PVPS I assumed they perform surgical procedures only. I was wrong! In addition to surgical procedures, they also perform skin treatments and skin procedures, and they also have a whole line of skin care products and makeup!

When I went to the Nocatee location, I met with the Aesthetician named Alison Kuzoian. She explained in detail about the numerous skin care products they carry and gave me a few samples to take home. I am not much of a makeup person, I usually throw on some foundation and mascara and that is it. Meeting with Alison was great and she really opened my eyes to how I should be taking care of my skin to protect it from damage, and what products would be the best for me. I only use an over the counter moisturizer at home, so finding about what I should be using to protect my skin, and have my skin look its best, has really been a learning experience for me! She provided me with some sample sized skin care products that would be great for my skin.

I have been using these products for about 5 days now and I can really tell a difference with my skin. My skin was always so dry and flaky. Now my skin really does stay soft and hydrated all day. I do love all of the products, however my favorite is the Smart Tone Sunscreen. I am at the pool every day with my kids and never wore sun screen on my face. Such a mistake, I know. The sunscreen keeps my face protected and also offers a slight tone of color (depending on how much you put on and rub in, your results may vary). MountCase RainGuard Baby Stroller Kit iPhone 5/5S

I will admit it…I am guilty. I am that person that annoys you as she fails to properly control her stroller as she texts and walks. That’s me and I am sorry. That is why I jumped at the opportunity to try a stroller mount for my IPhone. I figured I would try the novel idea of keeping both hands on my stroller and set up my new gadget.

I ordered the Stroller Kit iPhone 5/5S. The mount case is made by a company called Tigra Sport and right out of the box I felt a little skeptical. I am a mother of 2 very young boys and have always used the phone cases that have advertisements like “try your best to break me.” This case definitely did not scream “hand me to your toddler,” but I still stripped off my IPhone’s former armor and proceeded to assemble the new case.

I have the give credit to the company, these things are super easy to figure out and the enclosed directions are practically unnecessary. Literally as soon as I snapped the case in place, my mom called. Her call gave me the perfect opportunity to test how the case works when making calls. I turned the phone, which unclipped it from the mount, and it was to my ear in seconds but I discovered that this case is NOT made for calling, if the RainGuard is on. There are no holes in the earpiece that allow sound through so everything just sounds muffled. Its not a deal breaker, but it is of note that this case is not designed for talk, unless you remove the guard…and I really prefer my cases to be at least water resistant.

The next test was listening to music. I don’t think I am the only mother that blasts some serious tunes when I’m strolling; you know the classics…Sesame Street, Disney and Raffi. Well, this mounted case definitely allows for the use of your phone’s speaker. The majestic sounds flowed right out of my conveniently located and mounted phone. How lucky was I? Anyway, that pretty much restored the case’s functionality in my eyes, seeing as music allows me to take a break from my 3 year old’s favorite game of “Why? Mommy, Why?”
After using it for a while, the only other iPhone feature I discovered to be disabled, if you use the RainGuard, was TouchID. Overall, I think this is a great product for people who don’t use their phones as much as I like to when out and about. From my experiences with my two little profession phone breakers, I think I will need to put my old case back on. It looks like this company had previously focused a lot of their products for use during cycling, running or motorsports, and honestly, I think this product would be better suited on my husband’s bicycle than my stroller.

Be Prepared for the 2016 Hurricane Season #JAXREADY

Hurricane season for the Atlantic basin begins today, June 1, 2016, and runs through November 30, 2016. We have already had two named storms and most predictions point to an above average expectation for hurricanes in 2016. Florida has been on a bit of a winning streak in recent years having gone just over 10 years without a category 3 or higher storm (Wilma in October 2005). Many of us have moved to Florida in that period since the last major hurricane struck and may need a refresher on what risk this time of year brings to our doorsteps.

What does a typical hurricane season look like?

Based on historical weather records dating back to 1950, the Atlantic region will typically experience 12 tropical storms with sustained winds of 39 mph, of which six turn into hurricanes with winds reaching 74 mph or greater, and three major hurricanes category 3 or higher with sustained winds of at least 111 mph. Most of these hurricanes do not make landfall in the United States.

How many hurricanes typically hit Florida?

On average, one to two hurricanes (or more specifically, 1.75 hurricanes) make landfall on the US East coast every year. Of those, 40 percent hit Florida. Since 1851, 37 hurricanes have made direct hits on Florida.

There is little to no correlation between the total number of storms and those that make landfall in any given season. For example, 2010 was an extremely busy season, with 19 named storms and 12 hurricanes. Yet no hurricane, and only one tropical storm, made landfall in the US that year.

What should you do to prepare?

I have attached a couple of pages from a flyer distributed through my employer that are a great reference for storm preparation. Please review and share this detail with your friends and neighbors.

Practice putting up your storm shutters. Know how to do this before you have to do it. Make sure you have all of the tools and hardware necessary for this job organized and ready.

There is also a mobile app available from the City of Jacksonville called “JAXREADY” that will help you monitor weather threats and plan for evacuation in the event of a natural disaster.
