One Mom’s Journey with Asbestos and Mesothelioma

In 2006, Judy Gundlach, a then 35-year-old mother of a 3-year-old daughter, was diagnosed with the life-threatening disease, malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, a type of cancer that has been linked to prolonged exposure to asbestos, typically affects people who worked around asbestos and asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) for prolonged periods of time. Yet, there are other dangers of asbestos that all families should be aware, including people who lived with loved ones who were exposed to asbestos at work.

While Gundlach was growing up, she used the family laundry as a playroom, and would often spend hours playing with her toys in the same area that her father’s asbestos-ridden clothing was thrown into, waiting to be washed. Gundlach’s father, a former electrician, worked in various regions across Illinois where he came into constant contact with asbestos. In addition to playing around her father’s dirty laundry, Gundlach also gave him a hug daily, usually after work, before he changed clothes. Although rare, loved ones are at risk of second-hand exposure to asbestos. Since Gundlach never worked around asbestos herself, the probable culprit is that she was exposed via her father’s work clothing.

Asbestos Dangers

Asbestos was once used in a multitude of industries including construction, engineering, manufacturing, construction, welding, shipbuilding, and more. Because of its extreme resistance to fire and heat, asbestos was thought of as a miracle mineral until the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that ingestion of the small, thin fibers of asbestos caused a series of dangerous health conditions, including asbestosis and mesothelioma. Since these fibers aren’t detectable by the human eye, no one knows when or how much asbestos has been ingested. Once the fibers are in the body, it’s impossible to remove them all. Over time, the fibers attack the body, causing symptoms such as coughing, hacking, wheezing, and chest pain. Eventually, people who have asbestos fibers caught in their system run the risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, a disease that has no cure. Asbestosis, though not always fatal, can leave people with a lifetime of health issues.

Medical Help

In 2007, Gundlach began medical treatment for her mesothelioma. She was told right away by her physician that the treatments were meant to prolong her prognosis, not cure the disease. She went through two surgeries and several sessions of chemotherapy in New York, traveling back and forth from her home in St. Louis to Manhattan.

Although she still fights the cancer each, Gundlach has turned her fear into courage herself, her husband Dan, and her now 11-year-old daughter, Madeline. She says each day is a struggle, but keeping a positive attitude and laughing through the tough days has helped her and her family tremendously.

Gundlach’s Advice to Other Families

After living with a devastating disease at such a young for so many years, Gundlach decided to get involved. She attends annual asbestos awareness conferences and keeps abreast of all the current research and breakthroughs. Gundlach encourages all families to become aware of asbestos and to find out as much information as possible. In addition, she believes speaking out about the dangers of asbestos will help promote more awareness, and in turn more safety.

Even though asbestos is not used like it once was, the regulations came too late as millions of people across the world now suffer through dangerous health issues each and every day. In fact, there have been so many asbestos-related lawsuits in the past 20 years, that many companies were forced to set up mesothelioma trust funds in order to compensate those who are eligible for compensation in future cases. However, since the use of asbestos has declined dramatically, many families today are unaware of just how dangerous it can be.

For more information on asbestos and the risks of exposure, contact the EPA administrators in your state.

The Bandage Dress: Celebrating the Natural Female Figure

This is a guest post.

The concept of physical female beauty has certainly changed over the decades and it continues to do so. In addition, it varies from culture to culture so there is really no single social construct that can be claimed as the correct standard of female beauty. However, all of these diverse notions have something in common – that curves in the right places enhance the beauty of a woman’s figure, especially when they are flaunted. As a result, women favor figure-hugging clothes over loose, shapeless styles when they want to show off their bodies and attract attention. And nothing enhances a woman’s curves more than the bandage dress. It gets its name from the basic design of the fabric, which consists of strips of Elastene and Lycra that resemble bandages.

Good-bye, Body Shapers

Many women go through the agonizing process of getting into a body shaper before wearing the dress in order to achieve a clean silhouette. Anyone who has experienced squeezing herself into a body shaper can attest to the extreme discomfort of wearing one in the entirety of an affair. Bandage dresses – which also known as bodycon dresses – eliminate the need for a body shapers as the elastic material naturally follows the natural contours of a woman’s body. This dress combines the comfort of soft fabric and the structure needed to hug the body and highlight its curves.

Legendary Léger

There are currently hundreds of bodycon dress designs made by numerous brands but the original bandage dress is credited to the French designer, Hervé L. Leroux. He is more well-known for his fashion house called Hervé Léger, which may very well be the most popular brand of bandage dresses. After the first bandage dress was launched in 1989, it has become a “go-to” piece among women who want to look their best at a party or a night on the town. Skinnier physiques benefit from this dress as it gives them a fuller figure. On the other hand, voluptuous women will find the bodycon dress trickier to wear as it does not conceal bulges that they would otherwise want to be kept concealed – that’s just not the way this dress is built.

It takes a confident woman to wear a bandage dress well. It is definitely not a dress for the shy types as its skin-tight fabric leaves little to the imagination. The most important thing to remember in choosing a bodycon dress is to pick out the right size for your body. One size too small or too big will ruin the look. Since the dress is skin-tight, you may also layer it with a skirt to give it a different look. Today, bandage dresses come in a plethora of colors, designs, styles and price tags. Designer pieces by Hervé Léger can be quite pricey but thankfully, there are a lot or more affordable brands that carry a wide variety of bodycon dresses. As gorgeous as the bandage dress is, its beauty is only as good as the person wearing it. This is why you must make sure that the size, cut and colors complement your own physical features.

Bingo – an easy way to have a little break

This is a guest post.

Online Games

For many women, being a mom who works can mean not having enough hours in the day – for yourself, your kids, your partner, your work. You get pulled every which way, and sometimes it can feel overwhelming.

But although we’ve been brainwashed to believe that we can be superhuman in our approach to life, there is a lot to be said for admitting that you could do with a little break every now and then. And I’m not talking about going away for the weekend with the girls, or booking in for a massage; I mean a five minute period where you just down tools and relax.

If you had a few of these times throughout the day you’d be a far more effective and patient mom, wife or worker for the rest of the day. Fortunately, the existence of the internet and the fact that most of us have access to it 24/7 wherever we are, has made this much easier.

Online games are such an easy way to take five and there is one particular game that is really suited for those moments when you just want to unwind and relax. The game is bingo – a game that our mothers and grandmothers used to play down at the bingo hall for the same purpose. The only difference is that if you played in a bingo hall you’d have to assign an hour or two to it, at least, especially if you factor in the time it would take you to get there and back. With online bingo, there are games running around the clock and so whenever you want to play, you can login to a bingo site and be playing within minutes.

And online bingo is more fun when it’s free, check out Costa Bingo – a site that offers free bingo games to all depositing players every half hour. And even though the games cost nothing to play, you can still stand to win cash jackpots while you’re playing. Costa is one of a few high quality sites that provides full online bingo experience for free.

So why is bingo such a good way to relax? When you play the game online, you don’t even have to concentrate on the number calls. The software marks any matching numbers on your cards for you, and if you have a winning card, that will be logged automatically too. You don’t have to be first to shout ‘bingo’ as you would in a bingo hall. There’s something quite hypnotic about watching a game of bingo online, and seeing the progress on your cards. Of course, the chances of whether you win are completely random but if you did get a win, it would be an additional bonus to the mental and physical break you get by playing.

Of course, there are lots of other online games that you could play to get those five minutes of calm, but not all of them offer the same convenience, value and entertainment as a game of online bingo!

Having Fun w/ a Remote Controlled Helicopter from Tmart! (giveaway)

Remote Control Helicopter

What boy or man doesn’t like remote control helicopters? I don’t know many that wouldn’t love to play with one. It’s just such a boy thing. My stepsons always had one in the house. They make great gifts as well.

Tmart

I was sent a remote control helicopter to review with my 13-year-old son. It’s hard to get review items for him so I was excited that this worked out and so was he! Tmart has these and many more items to shop for plus Tmart offers free shipping. While browsing their website I see that they have so much to choose from. I saw this really cute owl necklace that I may have to get. I’m an owl fan. I don’t see much that they don’t carry and with free shipping why not shop there?

RC-Helicopter-JH-J6683

We received the JunHeng J6683 4 Channel Infrared Remote Control RC Helicopter with Gyro RTF Gray. I retails for $30.99. It’s suggested for ages 14 and up, but even when my son was 11 I think it would have been fine. It really depends on the child. My daughter flew it with some help. The helicopter came right away and was in great condition. I think this will last for quite a while as it already has bumped into walls and fell to the ground with no damage.

The helicopter was easy to set up and use. If I hadn’t gotten one to review I would have bought something similar for Christmas.  Boys usually like a remote-controlled something or other. I thought the coolest thing about it was how it lit up.

You could win a remote helicopter for yourself!! Click on the link to see which one it is. It’s red! See details below.

Perhaps they are not stars…

Stars in the sky

On December 26th we took my sister’s ashes to the beach. She passed away 8 years in October. December 26th was also the 18th anniversary of my brother’s death. It was nice to spend time with my other brother and parents.
