Green Living Tip – Wash Those Bags!!

I questioned my dad recently as to why he didn’t use reusable bags. He mentioned something about not ever washing the bags and how many germs the bags themselves carry. So I decided to wash mine – all of them.

It was super easy! Just take out the plastic bottoms and throw into the washer. Wash in the delicate or hand washing cycle and hang to dry. You can see some of mine above. When they were dry, I put the bottoms back in and folded. Good as new!!

I will do this more often now that I know I can.

Do you wash your bags?

From a grocery checker point of view: I love it when customers wash their bags!!! The smell better, and when I'm bagging it's nice to not have to worry about what goes in what bag, I always had to try and find the cleanest bag to put produce and veggies in. Not fun 🙂 I do wash my own bags, but I'm so forgetful, they hardly ever get used 🙁

Yes, I wash my own bags all the time! It never occured to me not to lol. Our bags get a lot of use and I would be really afraid to see what they would look like if I never washed them…ick! 😀

  3. I also wash my bags, and I switch off so Im not reusing the same ones to keep down on wear and tear.

Yup… I wash my bags, just like you said. I also wash the plastic bottoms separately – don't forget those!!

I was always afraid to wash them, I thought they would fall apart. 🙂

  6. I wash mine as well. But you need to make sure you're washing the plastic bottoms as well – although they can't go in the machine, they need to be cleaned. In all actuality, they're likley dirtier than the bags themselves, since whatever may leak is leaking onto the plastic bottoms first.

I wasn't aware of the bacteria until I read this post! Thank-you and will be washing my bags today!

  8. I do wash my bags, and when shopping I put loose produce into the plastic bags that are in the produce dept, packaged meat also goes into a plastic bag at checkout before being put into reuseable bags

  9. I do wash mine. I even have our last name written on them so that they know that I have purchased them and didn’t just grab one on my way to checkout.
