Vegas: family destination?

With a slogan like “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” it may be hard to envision Sin City as a family destination.  However, it is possible to enjoy time there with nearest and dearest without spending most of the trip wondering how to entertain the kids.

Just remember, in order to have a great family vacation in Sin City, it is important to know where to go, what to do and where to stay.  Here are some great tips on planning a Las Vegas vacation that the whole family can enjoy.

Finding a family-friendly hotel

There are plenty of things to do in and around the city with the whole family, so go ahead and bring the kids on a Vegas vacation, but remember that it all starts with finding the right hotel.  From the movie-themed Planet Hollywood Las Vegas to the aptly named Circus Circus, Las Vegas has a trove of hotels and resorts perfect for the whole family.  The former is great for families that love the silver screen, while Circus Circus will thrill visitors with its traveling circus theme and free shows every day.  Don’t forget Mandalay Bay and the Four Seasons, both of which have excellent pool facilities where families can kick back and relax. You can even find Las Vegas vacation rentals instead of a hotel.

See a show

While it is true that Las Vegas is known for its casinos, it is also true that people visit the city to take in the shows.  Some shows are geared for adults only, but there are several that are actually very kid-friendly.  For a taste of glamour mixed with a little danger, check out the impressive acrobatics at Cirque du Soleil.  If humor is on the menu for the evening, Gregory Popovich’s Comedy Pet Theatre is an excellent choice.  Just remember, the shows in Las Vegas rotate frequently, so there is never a shortage of entertainment options.

Zip line over Fremont Street

The Las Vegas Strip and the streets of Sin City just aren’t meant for children, but the skies above them sure are!  Mom, Dad and the kids can strap themselves to a cable wire and soar through the air under the bright lights of the Fremont Street Experience.  However, in order to avoid a meltdown from the little ones, it is a good idea to check any weight and height requirements before embarking on this particular adventure.

Go boating on Lake Mead

When one thinks of a Vegas vacation, a day on the lake isn’t usually what comes to mind.  But why sit inside the casinos all day when the whole family can throw on their swimsuits, rent a boat or some jet skis and enjoy the pristine Lake Mead?  The lake is nestled within a national park and is the result of the stemming of the Colorado River by the Hoover Dam.

Take a chopper tour of the Grand Canyon

Though it may be a bit of a trek from the city limits, the Grand Canyon is something not to be missed.  Staying active while on vacation is important – and healthy – so why not hike one of the natural wonders of the world?  Hiking the Grand Canyon can be a lot for the kids to deal with, but a helicopter tour allows everyone to get a taste of the canyon and participate in a partial hike.  Most chopper tours also allow access to the Colorado River.

With all these great family-friendly things to do in and around Las Vegas, what’s the delay?  Start planning a vacation today!
