Remember your child’s first birthday? Of course you do! One of the best parts of the first birthday is the cake!

It was such a busy time for me and my local grocery store gave us a free cake for both of my children for their first birthdays! A cake just for them to dig into and get messy with.

Unfortunately or fortunately they did not make too much of a mess as you can see in my pictures. (not the best pictures, I know)

I'm a mother of 2 who likes to get involved in too much! Besides writing here I started a non-profit, I'm on the PTO board, very active in my community and volunteer in the school. I enjoy music, reading, cooking, traveling and spending time with my family. We just adopted our 3rd cat and love them all!

  3. Very cute! For my son’s 1st bday we did get a small cake for him to ‘eat’ in his high chair. The photos are so cute!

  4. I wish I had thought out the whole cake thing better before my kids turned one. They both kind of stared at it and didn’t know what to do. I like the idea of topping it with foods they recognize, like cheerios and bananas…I bet my kids would have dug in for those!

  5. So cute! I cheat and have the bakery do them (they are free with the purchase of a cake here). But I only have them do really light color icing or just white!

  6. I never thought to make our own smash cake. one of our local bakeries includes one free with a regular cake purchase but its like 90% frosting.

  13. Great ideas. I remember my first son he just looked at it weird. When he finally put is hand in it and everyone laughed and reacted he kept doing it just to see what everyone would do. That as the funny part.

  14. I sort of wish I did a smash cake for her, but she managed to make a sufficient birthday mess with the strawberry shortcake I made her.

  15. LOL — one of my kids just DOVE Into the cake and had it all over every inch of his little body … but my other two were too weirded out by the sensation of the frosting and wouldn’t hardly touch it.

  17. I love first birthdays. Letting them go crazy with the cake is definitely a must. My mom made the same identical cake for each of my boys’ 1st birthdays as she did for mine.
