The Three Bears…

I like to tell bed time stories. Several years ago while telling my daughter about the Three Little Pigs, she wanted another story. So I decided to make my own version of Godilocks and the Three Bears. She was into Dora at the time, so my story was about Dora and the Three Monkeys (Boots).

The story is very similar to the original, but it’s Dora who was walking through the woods and got hungry. She went into Boots’ home and found chicken noodle soup instead of porridge. (My daughter loves chicken noodle soup.) Dora tries the soup, sits on the chairs and falls asleep on Boots’ bed. Then Boots and his mom and dad come home. After discovering Dora sleeping upstairs, Dora and Boots become fast friends and go on many adventures together!

I loved my version and never thought anything about it. I still tell her that version today. However…

She is in Kindergarten now and is learning about fairy tales. Yes, you see where this is going, right? The first story they learned about was the Three Little Pigs. (My version ended up with the wolf and pigs eating McDonalds together.) Next came The Three Bears…..

My daughter wanted my to tell her the story before she learned it in school. It was part of her “homework”. I took a deep breath and told her the real version.  Guess what? She didn’t believe me!!

She said, “No, that’s not the way it goes!” I laughed and said, “Yes it is.” She said, No, that’s the sorry with Dora and Boots”. So I had to fess up and tell her that I took The Three Bears and changed around the characters.

It took her a few days to believe me. I got a few chuckles out of the whole incident.

Have you changed around characters in a bed time story?

  3. That’s cool, I’ve never thought about doing that before! Going to try it!

  4. I used to change the characters in stories for my son. He always wanted super heros in them.

  5. So cute! I love how you adapted it. I’ve never been so creative 😛 Although, we change words to songs all the time!

  6. Love it! We often change names to the names of our kids in various stories when we want to “drive a point”, etc. I’ve also done it for an adoption story book which I often read to our daughter.

  7. That’s hilarious! I have never changed the characters, but I’ve changed what happens {he’s yet to discover just how many little kids get eaten in Grimm’s tales}.

  8. How fun, yes my kids use to have fun making up stories before bed. Good memories!

  10. Very cute. My toddler adds Spiderman or the Hulk to many of our stories, which changes the plot substantially. 🙂

  11. My daughter came home with a bunch of Goldilocks & the 3 Bears stuff on Friday. I guess it was their theme this week.

  12. I tell a “pretend story” to my five year old every night after we read our bedtime story. Usually he helps make it up with me and it’s usually about Monster Trucks or Dinosaur Hunters .. all stories that have his family members in it too.

  13. That is so funny LOL I would have never thought about it coming back to haunt you later down the road.

  14. I never thought about changing a story around (not a good storyteller, lol), but that is definitely creative!

  15. I would always change up the story for ours and incorporate him into it. It would make his imagination run wild.

  16. We substitute our kids names for the characters in books and do the same with songs.

  17. That is too cute. I have never tried switching the characters around, but it sounds like a fun change!

  18. That’s a sweet type of story switch! I have changed the main character to one of my children a time or two.
