I love to read and was excited to join a book review club. When I received the book “Call Me Kate: Meeting the Molly Maguires” I was a little apprehensive. It is a young adult historical fiction book. I wasn’t sure if it was something I would like. However, once I started reading it, I was hooked!
Mary Garrity Slaby or Molly Roe, her pen name, really captivated the reader with “Call Me Kate.” Or at least she did me!
The book is about a 14 year old girl named Katie McCafferty who grows up in a miner town in Pennsylvania. There is a mining accident and her father is no longer able to work. She, being the oldest, must go to work to help support her family. She gets a job doing housekeeping in her town, then gets a better job farther away. The era is set around the Cival War and how the minors are being forced to go to war. One of Katie’s friends gets caught up in the fight against the war.
Katie disguises herself as a boy to join a secret Irish Organization that wants to stop the draft. By doing this , Katie risks her job, family and her own life to rescue her friend.
I really enjoyed the book and about halfway through, couldn’t put it down. It’s one of those books you can’t wait to read more. I heard there are more books to come and am very excited! I would definitely recommend it for all ages.
You can buy it on Amazon.

I'm glad that Katie's story drew you in and kept you turning the pages. It's a great compliment to hear that as a reader you were hesitant going in but once you started you couldn't put it down.
