Time Management Tips for Moms Pursuing a Higher Degree.

In a previous article, we explored the possibility of earning a degree while being a stay-at-home mom; it is very doable, especially with online degrees making the whole process easier. We also covered some basic tips on how to make it work, including how you can finance your degree and get the whole family on board.

Getting started with the course of your choice, however, is just the first step. You will still face many challenges while trying to earn the degree. Time management is often considered the biggest challenge of them all and these next several tips will help you tackle this particular problem.

Work Around Your Daily Schedules

Studying during the day is often the best way to go. The kids are at school and you have the whole house to yourself. You can comfortably allocate at least an hour every day for keeping up with course materials and assignments. For more challenging programs, you can choose to allocate two to three hours.

There is always a way to work around your schedules. You can also study at the end of the day when the kids are asleep if you have other things to do throughout the day. Alternatively, you can allocate more hours on weekends to fill gaps in your study schedules.

Ideally, you want to spend a minimum of ten hours a week for the course. Divide the amount of time you want to allocate to the course based on your daily routines and try to keep your study sessions short and useful whenever possible.

Study with the Kids

You can also choose to study together with the kids. It is an excellent way to bond with your children since them seeing you going over books and working on assignments – the way they have to read their school books and work on their assignments – can actually motivate them further. It is not the best approach to take if you need complete silence or a particular environment to focus, but it’s worth a try nonetheless.

Studying with the kids also make the whole experience more pleasant. When trying to earn a nurse practitioner doctorate degree, for example, you can reduce the stress and tension of going over the course materials by having your kids around and studying with them.

Get Out of the House

One last secret trick is to find a study environment you’re comfortable with the most. This often means going to a local coffee shop or finding a comfortable spot in the nearby library so you can focus better. A productive hour spent studying is far better than a few hours trying to concentrate on the course materials.

Fortunately, programs such as the BSN to DNP online course from Regis College are very flexible. As long as you allocate enough time for studying, you will have no trouble earning the degree in the shortest amount of time possible.

These tips we just discussed in this article will help you manage your time and organize your study sessions more effectively throughout the course.
