New parents have quite an adjustment period to get through when their newborn first arrives. You’ll have a whole person that you just created, and that comes with more than a few responsibilities. But then comes the point where you’ll have to get back to work, which can become an issue in itself.
You’ll need to balance work and family life so you can be there with your child, look after them, and still get work done. As obvious as this, it can be relatively complicated to put into practice for the first time. But, it doesn’t need to be.
Knowing how to manage your work/life balance takes a bit of time, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A few practical tips help.
Use Routines
Quite a few people see routines as monotonous, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be a great way to balance your family life and work responsibilities. They help you create a greater sense of structure for you, your partner, and your kids, which can then help avoid a decent bit of stress and hassle later on.
The trick here is making sure you have routines that help you get everything done. A consistent morning routine, for example, should include getting your kids up at the same time, having breakfast regularly, and leaving for school and work at the same time.
Know Your Rights
Everyone knows that they’re supposed to know their rights, and they’ll usually have a general awareness of them. But, few people know the actual ins-and-outs of the laws that affect them, even when it comes to parental law, employment law and similar areas. Take the time to look into these so you can protect yourself if you need to.
Putting yourself in this position means you’ll know when to look into overtime laws and similar areas if you’re being overworked. It could also mean knowing when to use a workplace sexual harassment lawyer if you’ve been mistreated at work, for example.
While this could mean spending a bit of time reading up on your rights as a working parent, it’ll be more than worth it.
Prioritise What Matters More
One of the main reasons why people find balancing work and family life is because they’re trying to get countless things done at the same time. It’s why you could find yourself running back-and-forth every day trying to get work tasks done before running home to try to sort out laundry, cooking, and more than a few other responsibilities.
While many of these would be daily responsibilities, not all of them will be. By prioritising what actually needs to be done, you avoid quite a bit of daily stress. It could take a little time to figure this out, but there’s no reason why it wouldn’t help your work/life balance long-term.
Carve Out Quality Time
Speaking of priorities, spending quality time with your family should be near the top of the list, if not at the top. But, this doesn’t mean just making sure you have some time with them. It should actually be quality time, where you can bond with your family and enjoy yourselves. But, getting this can often be complicated.
It’s one of the reasons why balancing work and family life can be stressful. By making sure you schedule this time into your usual week, it shouldn’t have to be a problem. It could mean having less time for other areas, but that doesn’t always have to be a bad thing.
Since there isn’t much that’s more important than spending quality time with your family, there’s no reason not to carve out this time.
Make Time for Yourself Too
When you’re looking after your work/life balance, it’s natural to focus on your work responsibilities on top of family ones. You could end up putting your family first and your work second, which isn’t a bad thing. But, you’ll also need to make sure you’re taking time for yourself while you’re at it.
If you don’t, you could end up feeling burnt out and start seeing more and more mental health issues because of it. By taking the time for self-care when you need it, you look after your mental health while helping you take better care of your family and work life.
You’ll need to balance work and family life if you want to have both a healthy career and family. While this can take a little time to adjust to, it doesn’t have to be as hard as you’d think.
