Saving for your children

When they are very young, many children believe that money grows on trees – or at least inside the purses and wallets of mom and dad.  It is up to parents and other adults to help children understand where money really comes from and get them into the habit of saving it.  From the early days of the piggy bank in the corner of the bedroom to the thrill of taking control of an account in a real bank, there are many ways to encourage kids to take saving seriously and build up their own pot of money for the future.  Here are a few ideas on how to get them started.

Teach them to save early

It is hard for kids to learn the importance of money if it is only ever given to them in the form of an allowance or as a gift.  It is better to show them where money comes from – and the importance of saving it – by allowing them to earn it doing some simple chores around the house.  This will cause the child to make the connection between working and wages.  These chores can be very simple tasks to start with: tidying up and putting toys away or helping to feed and look after the pets are examples of the kind of simple tasks even very young children can do.

As they get older, domestic chores such as loading and emptying the dishwasher or making the beds can add to the number of earning and saving opportunities, and children can be encouraged to look for other opportunities outside the home, such as babysitting or taking neighbors’ dogs for walks.  You can also rope them in to help with a yard sale – teaching kids some basic business skills when they are young helps to equip them for the world of college and work when they leave home.

How children can save successfully

If left to their own devices, most children will spend whatever money they get as quickly as possible; however, they can easily be taught that money should be saved and used in different ways.  Saving for the future is, perhaps, the most difficult lesson to teach, but once they understand that they are building up funds either for a special purchase when they have enough, or for a much longer-term goal, they should get the idea.

Opening a savings account with a child is exciting for them, as they get familiar with the figures they see on a bank statement and what those figures mean in real dollars.  They can also be taught to understand interest, and watch as their money is added to in a different way.

Not all money, earned or otherwise, needs to go into savings.  Children should be allowed to keep some money available for day-to-day living and enjoyment.  If they can also be taught that not everyone is as fortunate as they are and be encouraged to give some of their earnings or allowance to charity, that will also serve as an important life-lesson for the future.

Getting the right balance

Although understanding finance is a serious business, children should be encouraged to see the enjoyable side of managing their money, saving it, and watching it grow.  The development of online banking enables savings accounts to be set up that can easily be accessed by the child saver with high levels of security, and a click here will open up many possibilities to consider.

Grandparents, other relatives, and friends can also play a part in teaching children to save, and that early start will give kids the confidence to manage their money wisely as they grow into adulthood.

Vegas: family destination?

 GrandCanyonWinter

With a slogan like “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” it may be hard to envision Sin City as a family destination.  However, it is possible to enjoy time there with nearest and dearest without spending most of the trip wondering how to entertain the kids.

Just remember, in order to have a great family vacation in Sin City, it is important to know where to go, what to do and where to stay.  Here are some great tips on planning a Las Vegas vacation that the whole family can enjoy.

Finding a family-friendly hotel

There are plenty of things to do in and around the city with the whole family, so go ahead and bring the kids on a Vegas vacation, but remember that it all starts with finding the right hotel.  From the movie-themed Planet Hollywood Las Vegas to the aptly named Circus Circus, Las Vegas has a trove of hotels and resorts perfect for the whole family.  The former is great for families that love the silver screen, while Circus Circus will thrill visitors with its traveling circus theme and free shows every day.  Don’t forget Mandalay Bay and the Four Seasons, both of which have excellent pool facilities where families can kick back and relax. You can even find Las Vegas vacation rentals instead of a hotel.

See a show

While it is true that Las Vegas is known for its casinos, it is also true that people visit the city to take in the shows.  Some shows are geared for adults only, but there are several that are actually very kid-friendly.  For a taste of glamour mixed with a little danger, check out the impressive acrobatics at Cirque du Soleil.  If humor is on the menu for the evening, Gregory Popovich’s Comedy Pet Theatre is an excellent choice.  Just remember, the shows in Las Vegas rotate frequently, so there is never a shortage of entertainment options.

Zip line over Fremont Street

The Las Vegas Strip and the streets of Sin City just aren’t meant for children, but the skies above them sure are!  Mom, Dad and the kids can strap themselves to a cable wire and soar through the air under the bright lights of the Fremont Street Experience.  However, in order to avoid a meltdown from the little ones, it is a good idea to check any weight and height requirements before embarking on this particular adventure.

Go boating on Lake Mead

When one thinks of a Vegas vacation, a day on the lake isn’t usually what comes to mind.  But why sit inside the casinos all day when the whole family can throw on their swimsuits, rent a boat or some jet skis and enjoy the pristine Lake Mead?  The lake is nestled within a national park and is the result of the stemming of the Colorado River by the Hoover Dam.

Take a chopper tour of the Grand Canyon

Though it may be a bit of a trek from the city limits, the Grand Canyon is something not to be missed.  Staying active while on vacation is important – and healthy – so why not hike one of the natural wonders of the world?  Hiking the Grand Canyon can be a lot for the kids to deal with, but a helicopter tour allows everyone to get a taste of the canyon and participate in a partial hike.  Most chopper tours also allow access to the Colorado River.

With all these great family-friendly things to do in and around Las Vegas, what’s the delay?  Start planning a vacation today!

Shari’s Berries

GFB_13_BRR30206_CNF72315_W1_SQ

I mentioned last week some Practical Ideas for Valentine’s Day. Included was some yummy chocolate covered strawberries and cute love bug cake pops. Guess what? I got to try them!!

I got a chance to go shopping at Shari’s Berries  !! They have so many items to choose from it was actually hard to choose just one! I really wanted to try the mini cheesecakes. And the cookies looked awesome. But I really wanted to try what Shari’s Berries are famous for – the strawberries!

There different varieties as well. There’s Gourmet Dipped Swizzle, which are delicious chocolate with more chocolate dripped on. Then you have the Gourmet Dipped Fancy, which has peanuts or chocolate chips on top of the delicious chocolate. Gourmet Dipped Premium has salted almonds and  cookies and cream and cacao nibs. Hand Dipped Cocktails Strawberries with hints of butter rum, amaretto and champagne sound heavenly!!  There is the Valentine’s Day variety that I received.

See what I mean!! So many to choose from!! I want one of each!!

I finally chose the 3 Love Bug Cake Pops & 6 Valentine’s Strawberries which costs $44.98 plus shipping. But you can find coupons to use here.

Above is a picture of how the goodies came. Dry ice was included to keep them cool. But it is recommend not to put the strawberries in the fridge as they are better at room temperature and best if eaten within 48 hours. No problem there!!

So what did I think? YUMM!!

The strawberries were wonderful, sweet and huge. The chocolate was heavenly. Since I’m counting calories, I’m happy to report each berry is only 90-100 calories each!

The kids each tried a Love Bug Cake Pop and wanted seconds!!

This is on the outside of the box before we even opened it! We all got a kick of that!!

To Work or Not to Work?

104
This mommy has not been working full time since our move in February. It has been nice not having to go into an office and work for 40 hours a week. I’m still working…here on my blog. When Savannah goes to school, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I work non-stop for  4-5 hours. And of course in between on other days. I have no idea how I took care of this blog, worked 40 hours and laundry, dinner and all the other stuff us moms do! Some days there is just so much stuff going on!
However, I think I will be going back to an office job in August when Savannah starts school full time. She will be in Kindergarden. I love being home and working on Mommy Has to Work, but I don’t think I’m made out to be a stay at home mom. Even a work at home mom. Only because my husband is home all day too! That is a little stressful having us both home all day. I do try to keep busy though.
A new elementary school will be built in the next two years and I would love to work in the school. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, but I don’t see that happening so second choice would be to work in the school in the office. I have a ton of experience working in a medical office, so I’m thinking of taking a few courses to add to my resume. Courses such as Sage Line 50 Training, would help focus with jobs that involve accounting, book keeping and payroll courses.
While I can probably get a job at a medical office, I really think I want to wait and work at the new school. So maybe I’ll get another year at home. I’m so undecided!! Who knows? Maybe this will the year I can do a ton more here on Mommy Has to Work and then I can be a work at home mom. Maybe I can some part time job until the school opens. It was easier when I had to work then all the decisions were made for me! Just work, work, work!

Why Florida is Number 1 for Families

007

This is partnered guest post.

Famous for Disney World, great beaches and delicious oranges, Florida is actually more than just one of the best places to go on vacation in the United States.  It’s also one of the best states in which to raise a family.  Here are some of the top reasons one might consider relocating to the Sunshine State with the kids.

Something for everyone

The Sunshine State offers something for everyone – young or old – which makes it the ideal place to live.  With warm tropical weather throughout the year, the winters are mild and the summer months are balmy and relaxing.  Sure, the weather is appealing for families that enjoy outdoor activities all year long, but what else does this great state have to offer?

The state of Florida is a peninsula and is therefore surrounded by water on all but one side.  The Gulf of Mexico on the west coast and the Atlantic Ocean on the east allow for water-related activities and sports all year-round.  The combination of mild weather and easy access to the water means families can enjoy outdoor sports, camping and other exciting adventures.  It’s almost as if families are living every day on vacation!

It is almost impossible to mention Florida without also mentioning its many theme parks, including Disney World, Universal Studios and Busch Gardens.  These places draw in millions of tourists every year and offer plenty of entertainment for the family year-round.  Many parks have special pricing for Florida residents so that they can enjoy the perks of living so close to these family-friendly parks.

Florida is more affordable than other states

When it comes to the cost of living, Florida is more affordable than many other states.  This means common expenses such as insurance, groceries, rent, gas and utilities are lower than in many other places throughout the country.  This affordability extends to the real estate market as well, since many Florida houses for sale are listed quite low and include top-notch amenities, impressive space and great locations.  To top it off, Florida is one of the few states that has no additional income tax for its residents.

The educational system

Education is a top concern for any family moving to Florida.  Though Florida’s education system has been criticized in the past, there are some excellent school districts throughout the state.  It is important for parents to research the different school zones if they have school-aged children and ensure that their kids are getting the best education.  Remember, Florida has 67 different counties, each of which is responsible for its own educational system, so the districts are just as diverse as the people within the state.  However, most Florida schools offer excellent education in addition to extracurricular activities that are ideal for preparing kids for higher education.

The Sunshine State is indeed a beautiful place to live, with its crystal blue waters, sandy beaches and palm trees blowing in the breeze.  It is affordable for families that are just starting out and has a diverse population consisting of transplants from other states as well as homegrown Floridians.  With so many great attributes, it’s hard to find a good reason not to move to Florida.
