People nowadays are becoming more aware of the impact that human activities have on the environment. More and more of our present-day environmental problems are being talked about, be it on television, the Internet, or other forms of media. Our waterways are becoming more polluted, air in major cities is getting dirtier, many of our landfills are now filled to capacity, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is poisoning marine life—these are all examples of the pollution that we as people are causing.

As members of all life on Earth, we have the responsibility to clean up our act, beginning in our own homes. There are so many things we can do on an individual or family level to lessen our impact on the environment. These include reusing and repurposing old items instead of buying new ones, conserving water and energy, cutting down on our use of plastic bags and packaging materials, and separating our biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage for easier recycling.

In this article, we’d like to focus on one common activity we engage in at home that is not often seen as having any particularly significant effect on the environment. This activity is printing.

Why printing needs to be more environment-friendly

It may seem pretty innocuous, but if you think about it, printing can actually contribute significantly to the amount of waste churned out by residential environments.

For instance, a lot of the paper used in printing is discarded indiscriminately by people, and emptied ink and toner cartridges also end up in landfills and add to the ever-increasing amount of e-waste that contaminate the environment. Frequently, these empty cartridges are also melted or incinerated, causing the release of potentially harmful substances like dioxins and hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.

It’s a good thing that there are simple things you can do at home that can make printing a more environment-friendly activity. Here are some of them:

A pile of empty Ink Cartridges waiting for recycling.

Choose remanufactured ink and toner cartridges

What exactly are remanufactured ink and toner cartridges? Simply put, remanufactured printer cartridges are professionally recycled cartridges. Using the cartridge shells that are usually just thrown away or destroyed, companies that remanufacture cartridges take these otherwise useless shells to give them a new lease on life.

Remanufacturing is a thorough process that involves state-of-the-art cleaning, drying, ink/toner replenishment, and sealing—a systematic procedure that ensures that the final products are made to the same level of quality and performance as original equipment manufacturer (OEM) products.

On top of being one the best ways to reduce printer-related e-waste, choosing remanufactured printer cartridges can also help consumers save money, thanks to the significantly lower prices of these alternative products compared to OEM variants.

Print using economical typefaces

In 2014, Pittsburgh high school student Suvir Mirchandani became quite famous after his study about the Garamond typeface was published in the Journal for Emerging Investigators. In his paper, Mirchandani noted that U.S. federal and state agencies could save some $394 million a year if they printed using only Garamond.

There’s a good reason why using serif typefaces like Garamond and Times New Roman, as well as sans-serif typefaces like Century Gothic can help you save ink. Compared to other typefaces, those mentioned are designed with very thin letters and numerals, making them more economical in terms of ink usage. As you can imagine, less ink used means less waste cartridges and less ink byproducts released into the environment.

You can take things up a notch by printing using fonts that were created by innovative companies and designers specially for the purpose of helping people saving ink. Examples include Ecofont, which has letters and numbers with holes in them. Another font, Ryman Eco, is a typeface made up of fine lines. The tiny holes and fine lines are designed to give the printed text a solid look even though it is actually printed using less ink.

Print only when you need to

Now that electronic handheld devices are everywhere, it is much easier to do without printed copies of documents. From travel itineraries and school readings to interior design ideas and copies of articles you like, there are so many materials that can be conveniently saved in electronic devices nowadays.

If you need a copy of a non-essential document or something that you don’t have to submit as an official or formal document in paper form, do the environment a favor by going digital instead.

Use both sides of each paper

In case you really need to print a document that you’re just going to keep for your own use, consider printing it out on used or scratch paper. Most people tend to keep pieces of paper with only one of the sides printed on. Instead of throwing them away, why not reuse them?

Use sustainable paper products

If you’re not accustomed to reading labels, consider doing so. Knowing whether the paper products you are using are sustainably sourced or manufactured is another great way to print in a more eco-friendly manner.

Choose paper products that are made from pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled fibers, or look for those that use pulp from pulpwood plantations that practice responsible forestry.

Use vegetable oil-based ink and toner products

Traditionally, printer ink is made using petroleum-based oil, but there are now companies that manufacture ink made from vegetable sources like soy. These non-edible inks are typically biodegradable, which is good for the environment since they decompose more easily compared to conventional inks, and they are also quicker to remove from the paper during the recycling process. Furthermore, emissions of substances like volatile organic compounds are also minimized or completely eliminated.

Living a sustainable lifestyle is challenging, but it can be a very rewarding experience as well. Making small changes in simple activities like printing can make a big difference in the long run if you make it a habit to be more conscious about your environmental footprint. We encourage you to inspire your friends and family—especially the children to pitch in and to do their part in making your home and community more eco-friendly!

Halloween Costumes

Halloween is so much different now than when I was little. It seemed there weren’t many choices and choosing a costume was easy. Nowadays however there are 100’s of costumes to choose from!

When I asked my daughter what she wanted to be for Halloween she had a few ideas but wanted to visit Costume SuperCenter to get more ideas.

We went through them all several times before deciding on the Cheerless Cheerleader Costume. She was interested in a Cheerleader Costumes. While looking at all the cheerleader costumes she found the Cheerless Cheerleader costume and wanted to get that for Halloween. I had never heard of such a thing and when explaining it to others I got done strange looks. Think Gothic Cheerleader.

We were sent this costume to review. We were both very pleased with the costume. However the picture on the website sowed it with a few more accessories so I purchased some additional items to make the costume complete.

Top Ten Reasons to Apply for a Job in Social Care

Autumn-2015-issue_front-cover_3_300x424
If you’re looking for a rewarding career, why not find out about the available opportunities in social care jobs? The work is varied and it’s suitable for people of all ages, whether you’re just starting out on the career ladder or looking for a change.
Read on for the top ten reasons why social care could be the career path for you:
1. Skills from your former job can be easily transferred to social care due to the diverse career opportunities in the sector. For example, a graduate with a Masters degree in corporate management, who has worked in the private sector, could utilise transferable skills by joining the care sector as a chief executive.
2. According to Laura Anthony, the regional co-ordinator of training organisation Skills for Care, a career in social care offers opportunities for progression such as becoming a home manager, going into social work or counselling, or joining the housing and education sectors.
3. Social care jobs are very rewarding, as they involve helping people to enjoy a better quality of life. You can really make a difference and see those people you’re helping develop over a period of time with your support.
4. There’s plenty of on-the-job training and it’s up to you how far you progress. If you’re ambitious, anything’s achievable and you can diversify into the branch of social care which best suits you with ongoing training.
5. Each individual job features lots of different duties and responsibilities. For example, a team manager helping young people with physical and learning disabilities assists with education, employment, health and social aspects of their life skills, while liaising with health professionals, agencies and schools to create a balanced support system.
6. A social care job offers an attractive salary, ranging from around £18,000 per annum for personal assistants to £32,000 for a senior social worker, and £42,000 for an assistant service manager.
7. For unemployed people, there are a number of government initiatives aimed at helping people into a career in social care. Speak to an advisor at your local Job Centre Plus for information.
8. If you’re looking to complete a university degree in social work as a mature student who’s changing career, then a bursary may be available to help with the costs of your education. Even if you don’t have a qualification in social care, it’s still possible to work in the sector, as a good attitude and life experience can be just as valuable. Having qualifications enables you to take on a role with more responsibility.

9. People will always need care – it’s a recession-free industry. Unlike in many other sectors, there will always be employment in the care sector.

10. If you’re already a graduate aiming to retrain as a social worker, the Children’s Workforce Development Council is running the Step Up To Social Work recruitment scheme, offering graduates £15,000 for retraining as a social worker.

Catch Up on Fall TV with Netflix!

I am a member of Netflix Stream Team.

Gotham

All my shows are starting up again! I’m so excited!!

Two of my favorites are now on Netflix– Gotham and The Walking Dead, so you can catch up before watching the new season.

GothamGOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. I love Gotham. Gotham is set before the first Batman movie came out. Bruce Wayne is only a young teenager and his parents were killed in Season One. Penguin is a main character in the show but not as I remember him in the movies. You also will see glimpses of the Riddler and the Joker. I enjoy watching the characters in the making.

Walking_Dead

The Walking DeadIn the wake of a zombie apocalypse, survivors hold on to the hope of humanity by banding together to wage a fight for their own survival. I am so in love with this story. I never watched it until last year. I watched Seasons 1-4 on Netflix then watched Season 5 live. This summer I watched it all over again getting ready for Season 6. The characters are what make this show a success!

Both of these shows are now on Netflix. Catch up and then watch them live.

What are some of your favorite show on Netflix right now?

If you want to have a fun filled day with your family, full of Halloween excitement, I highly recommend going to SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular event! This event is fun for all ages, but especially for the kiddos. There is so much to do and so much to see!

image001 (2)

I got to attend the Media opening day event on October 3rd with my husband and two children. My children were super excited about trick or treating and seeing all of the Halloween decorations that SeaWorld has.

Here is some information about the SeaWorld Halloween Spooktacular:

Children and adults alike will be immersed in an underwater “fantasea” filled with trick-or-treating, dancing sea creatures and pumpkin fish, where kids can also create sea-themed arts and crafts.

Trick or Treat – Kids can follow the special Halloween Spooktacular pathways through many different stations filled with a wide array of sweets and treats as fun loving sea creatures greet and mingle with guests. Hop aboard the Seven Seas Railway with Otto the Octopus and enjoy a whimsical train ride through Shamu’s Happy Harbor®.

Penelope’s Party Zone – Located in Bayside Stadium, Penelope’s Party Zone comes to life when families dance and play along to the spooky sound waves broadcast by a live DJ, listen to spooky stories and enjoy fun activities with countless bubbles floating overhead and colorful pumpkinfish gliding beside. Dine with Shamu® Spooktacular

Brunch – Enjoy a delicious menu of seasonal and sustainable items while sitting at a poolside table that brings you closer than ever to our majestic whales. Sesame Street’s Countdown to Halloween – Join Count von Count, Elmo, and everyone’s favorite friends from Sesame Street for the kookiest, funniest Halloween hullaballoo ever!

This event is set up in the back of the park at the Ports of Call entrance. The event starts at 12pm, so if you want to get to the park early to enjoy some rides and see the Shamu show before trick or treating, that is a great plan! The event also closes at 7pm and runs weekends in October (3-4, 10-11, 17-18, 24-25, and 31) and is included with park admission. Costumes are not required but I do recommend wearing one!! Seeing all of the different costumes was so much fun.

I loved the different trick or treating candy stations. The signs are actually labeled with what kind of candy that specific station is giving out, which I think is a fabulous idea. So if your child doesn’t like Tootsie Rolls then you don’t have to waste time in that line!

The trick or treat trails are filled with colorful and friendly Halloween decorations. If your little one is scared of halloween ghosts and goblins, no worries!! Nothing scary at all. The trail is also filled with bubble blowing stations and I just love the fun music playing.

The event has “boardwalk” type games to play for prizes. Some of the cute prizes include a stuffed colorful skeleton and a stuffed bright orange pumpkin. They also have merchandise available, I love the bright orange SeaWorld Spooktacular tshirts! Over near Penelope’s Party Zone there are coloring activities and more fun games to play.

If you are hungry there are food stations set up, and also a kids cookie station!! For $7 your child gets an adorable Shamu souvenir bucket, frosting, candy toppings, milk or apple juice and of course a yummy freshly baked cookie. There are tables set up so the kids can decorate it right there, or they can take it to go.

This event is a ton of fun, and let me add that I LOVE that the event is included with admission price! I can’t wait to bring my children back next year!
