A Beginner’s Guide to Pier Fishing

This is a partnered guest post.

Like fishing but dislike boats? Pier fishing is a great way for anglers to get their hooks into deep water without the hassle and upkeep of a boat or the inconveniences of a beach. While many maintain fishing from a boat is the best way to catch “the big one,” most agree that pier fishing is the next best thing.

What You Need

If you’re interested in pier fishing, chances are you’ve already been boat or beach fishing and you already have your necessary equipment.
Other than lines and hooks appropriate to the species of fish you’re going after, people fishing off piers ought to bring gaffs and nets to yard the caught fish up to the top of the pier without losing it back to the drink. You’ll need something to keep your catch in, too, like a game bag or a cooler.  Most anglers bring two coolers — one for the fish and one for cold drinks and snacks.

As far as bait goes, that’s going to depend on the fish you want to catch. So, for both live and artificial bait, chat with locals and see what they recommend. When fishing in new waters, have an assortment of jigs so you have lots to try if you don’t get any luck with your first choice.

For rigs, a lot of people recommend beach-fishing rigs because of the long reach, but others find those to be hard to manoeuver on a pier with pedestrians around. Be aware some piers prohibit casting. Whatever rig you choose, have a clamp or some rope to secure the rod when you need my hands free for something else.

Don’t forget the peripherals, either. You’ll need sunscreen, a hat and polarized sun glasses, which cut glare so you can see the fish underwater and reduce eye strain.

Finally, if you’re going out of state, don’t forget you might need to buy a new fishing license.

What You Do

The first thing you should do, once you’ve assembled some gear together, is find the best times to fish at your nearest pier. Many species of fish are seasonal and that plays into your decisions for rigging your line.

Using your polarized lenses to check the water for evidence of fish movement, walk down the pier and see what the other people fishing are up to. You might notice most anglers are on one side or another. There’s a reason for that and that reason is most likely the current.

Follow their lead and set up your gear. You want your bait to be taken right, usually under you, where the fish are living in the artificial reef created by the pier’s support system.

Where to Go

Anywhere with a pier without local regulations preventing fishing is suitable. To get some first-class catches, try Virginia Beach, Va. or St. Petersburg, Fla. These two cities, and the smaller surrounding towns, boast long piers with lots of marine life under them. Virginia Beach has easy access from the boardwalk and a diversity of fish to catch. It helps that there are plenty of cheap hotels in Virginia Beach including some near the pier so you won’t miss out on any good fishing action.  Spanish mackerel and pompano are best to fish for in Virginia.

If you head south to Florida, head over to St. Petersburg. This is where you can catch grouper, mackerel, tarpon and jacks, and even shark off piers.

Vegas: family destination?

 GrandCanyonWinter

This is partnered guest post.

With a slogan like “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” it may be hard to envision Sin City as a family destination.  However, it is possible to enjoy time there with nearest and dearest without spending most of the trip wondering how to entertain the kids.

Just remember, in order to have a great family vacation in Sin City, it is important to know where to go, what to do and where to stay.  Here are some great tips on planning a Las Vegas vacation that the whole family can enjoy.

Finding a family-friendly hotel

There are plenty of things to do in and around the city with the whole family, so go ahead and bring the kids on a Vegas vacation, but remember that it all starts with finding the right hotel.  From the movie-themed Planet Hollywood Las Vegas to the aptly named Circus Circus, Las Vegas has a trove of hotels and resorts perfect for the whole family.  The former is great for families that love the silver screen, while Circus Circus will thrill visitors with its traveling circus theme and free shows every day.  Don’t forget Mandalay Bay and the Four Seasons, both of which have excellent pool facilities where families can kick back and relax. You can even find Las Vegas vacation rentals instead of a hotel.

See a show

While it is true that Las Vegas is known for its casinos, it is also true that people visit the city to take in the shows.  Some shows are geared for adults only, but there are several that are actually very kid-friendly.  For a taste of glamour mixed with a little danger, check out the impressive acrobatics at Cirque du Soleil.  If humor is on the menu for the evening, Gregory Popovich’s Comedy Pet Theatre is an excellent choice.  Just remember, the shows in Las Vegas rotate frequently, so there is never a shortage of entertainment options.

Zip line over Fremont Street

The Las Vegas Strip and the streets of Sin City just aren’t meant for children, but the skies above them sure are!  Mom, Dad and the kids can strap themselves to a cable wire and soar through the air under the bright lights of the Fremont Street Experience.  However, in order to avoid a meltdown from the little ones, it is a good idea to check any weight and height requirements before embarking on this particular adventure.

Go boating on Lake Mead

When one thinks of a Vegas vacation, a day on the lake isn’t usually what comes to mind.  But why sit inside the casinos all day when the whole family can throw on their swimsuits, rent a boat or some jet skis and enjoy the pristine Lake Mead?  The lake is nestled within a national park and is the result of the stemming of the Colorado River by the Hoover Dam.

Take a chopper tour of the Grand Canyon

Though it may be a bit of a trek from the city limits, the Grand Canyon is something not to be missed.  Staying active while on vacation is important – and healthy – so why not hike one of the natural wonders of the world?  Hiking the Grand Canyon can be a lot for the kids to deal with, but a helicopter tour allows everyone to get a taste of the canyon and participate in a partial hike.  Most chopper tours also allow access to the Colorado River.

With all these great family-friendly things to do in and around Las Vegas, what’s the delay?  Start planning a vacation today!

Why Florida is Number 1 for Families

007

This is partnered guest post.

Famous for Disney World, great beaches and delicious oranges, Florida is actually more than just one of the best places to go on vacation in the United States.  It’s also one of the best states in which to raise a family.  Here are some of the top reasons one might consider relocating to the Sunshine State with the kids.

Something for everyone

The Sunshine State offers something for everyone – young or old – which makes it the ideal place to live.  With warm tropical weather throughout the year, the winters are mild and the summer months are balmy and relaxing.  Sure, the weather is appealing for families that enjoy outdoor activities all year long, but what else does this great state have to offer?

The state of Florida is a peninsula and is therefore surrounded by water on all but one side.  The Gulf of Mexico on the west coast and the Atlantic Ocean on the east allow for water-related activities and sports all year-round.  The combination of mild weather and easy access to the water means families can enjoy outdoor sports, camping and other exciting adventures.  It’s almost as if families are living every day on vacation!

It is almost impossible to mention Florida without also mentioning its many theme parks, including Disney World, Universal Studios and Busch Gardens.  These places draw in millions of tourists every year and offer plenty of entertainment for the family year-round.  Many parks have special pricing for Florida residents so that they can enjoy the perks of living so close to these family-friendly parks.

Florida is more affordable than other states

When it comes to the cost of living, Florida is more affordable than many other states.  This means common expenses such as insurance, groceries, rent, gas and utilities are lower than in many other places throughout the country.  This affordability extends to the real estate market as well, since many Florida houses for sale are listed quite low and include top-notch amenities, impressive space and great locations.  To top it off, Florida is one of the few states that has no additional income tax for its residents.

The educational system

Education is a top concern for any family moving to Florida.  Though Florida’s education system has been criticized in the past, there are some excellent school districts throughout the state.  It is important for parents to research the different school zones if they have school-aged children and ensure that their kids are getting the best education.  Remember, Florida has 67 different counties, each of which is responsible for its own educational system, so the districts are just as diverse as the people within the state.  However, most Florida schools offer excellent education in addition to extracurricular activities that are ideal for preparing kids for higher education.

The Sunshine State is indeed a beautiful place to live, with its crystal blue waters, sandy beaches and palm trees blowing in the breeze.  It is affordable for families that are just starting out and has a diverse population consisting of transplants from other states as well as homegrown Floridians.  With so many great attributes, it’s hard to find a good reason not to move to Florida.
